Ester Gubbrud '02 is now working for Risk Modeling Solutions, which is a catastrophe modeling company in the San Francisco area. She tells us "RMS is going to be hiring a ton of interns... if you know of people with a nice mix of math/cs skills and geology/catastrophe/weather interest, it might make for a nice summer gig. Chris Bystroff (Carleton '83) has a joint appointment in computer science and biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and does research in computational biology. He will be presenting a talk titled "Fold a protein, save the world" on Monday, May 7, at 3:30 in Olin 141. Chris's goal will be to describe that state of the art in solving the protein folding problem. To that end, he will introduce the related problem of computational protein design and show some applications towards biosensors, bioremediation, and enzyme design for alternative energy sources. All computer science students are welcome!

Carleton student Evan Hatampour tells us that he is looking to hire another Carleton student to do some graphic and web design. Specifically, he needs assistance in creating a banner and logo, and also polishing a web page template. He indicates that he has money to pay, so this is effectively a short-term consulting gig. Paisley Consulting, located in Plymouth, MN, is looking to hire three interns for a six month stint. According to the flyer that they sent us, the position entails assisting software engineers with installation and support of Java based products via telephone and e-mail, as well as assisting with the evaluation, analysis, and resolution of technical problems for both internal and external customers. Ryan Wakeham '03 is now working for NetSPI, which is a local computer security company. They have hired a number of Carleton graduates in the past, and are again looking to hire. Ryan will be running an information session on Thursday, April 19, at 4 PM, in Sayles-Hill 251.

The University of Minnesota Virtual Laboratory for Earth and Planetary Materials (VLab) is accepting applications for interns for the summer of 2007. The focus of the program is the application of computational approaches and visualization methods to supercomputing research. This includes digital simulation and advanced computation and several aspects of high-performance computing and scientific modeling and simulation as well as graphics, visualization, informatics, and high-performance network communications. Interns work with faculty members and their research groups on projects using high-performance computing environments to address problems in science and engineering that could not otherwise be attempted. A major data mining conference will be held in Minneapolis in April. The SIAM (Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics) International Conference on Data Mining, more briefly known as SDM, will be held on April 26-28, 2007, at the Minneapolis Radisson University Hotel. Dave Musicant will be attending, as well as some of his research students. If you want to go as well, they would welcome your company! It costs $170 for a student to register, and this includes all sessions, workshops on the third day (a Saturday), and continental breakfasts. Ohio Wesleyan University has announced a new REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) site beginning this summer. The topic of the site is Interdisciplinary Scientific Computation, which consists of research projects in astronomy, computer science, mathematics/statistics, and physics. The Computer Science Department at Ithaca College is hosting an NSF-sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates program during the summer of 2007. This program provides the opportunity to be involved with research in the fields of Virtual Reality, Robotics, and Fractal Analysis and Visualization. The University of Virginia has announced an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) for undergraduate students this summer on the topic of Computer Applications for Medicine. The dates are June 11-August 8, and they provide housing, meals, and a $3200 stipend.
