Carleton student Evan Hatampour tells us that he is looking to hire another Carleton student to do some web development. Specifically, he needs assistance in constructing a website with a database back end. He indicates that he has money to pay, so this is effectively a short-term consulting gig. Frances E. Allen has long been known in computer science for her work in compiler optimization, parallelization, and high performance computing. She was recently granted the Turing Award, which is considered by many to be the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for computing. Allen is particularly noteworthy as she is now the first female recipient of the Turing Award! Visit the ACM website for more information.

Carnegie Mellon University has announced a new conference for undergraduate women in computer science to be held at Carnegie Mellon on October 5-7, 2007. The conference is research focused and will provide opportunities for undergraduate women to work on exploratory problems in teams led by researchers from industry and academia. Participants will also be able to

• meet others who share their curiosity and interest in computer science
• discuss their research
• explore the research experience in academia and industry
• present a talk and/or poster: great for first-timers!

Hope College is hosting a Computer Science NSF REU summer undergraduate research program in the summer of 2007. They have support for at least five undergraduate researchers who are not Hope students, and they have a special initiative to encourage the participation of students from underrepresented groups.
