Computing Conference for Students
The 40th annual Midwest Instruction and Computing Symposium (MICS) will take place on April 20-21, 2007 at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota. This is a technical computer science conference aimed at both students and faculty, which gives students an opportunity to present papers and posters about work that they've done. The conference also has a programming contest and a robot contest, so it sounds like lots of fun! Do you have a project that you might consider presenting? Check out http://www.cs.und.edu/mics07/ for more information. (If you want to submit an abstract, the deadline is January 12, 2007.)

David Liben-Nowell (dlibenno, CMC 320) announces: "I am beginning a new research project on patterns of friendship formation, and I am looking for some students (most likely two) to work with me on this project. The immediate short-term goal is to write a crawler for a large online social-networking site; after the data collection, we will work on analyzing particular patterns of friendships within the data. [Click above for more information about the project.] If you are interested, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. I expect you to commit to working on the project through at least Winter and Spring 2007, and preference will be given to students willing to commit to working on this project beyond this academic year (possibly including Summer 2007)."
