Programming Contest Kickoff
Once again, Carleton will be assembling teams of students to participate in the ACM Programming Contest. The experience is totally fun, and you get to practice different styles of programming than you may experience in your courses. The contest itself will be held on Saturday, November 11, at Gustavus Adolphus College. Want to participate and show how awesome Carleton is? Contact Dave Musicant (email dmusican) with questions or to express your interest by the evening of Monday, September 18. If you want to learn more about the contest in general, check out the contest website. You don't need to put in a lot of time into this: showing up at the main event and having fun is what matters most.

Spring Picnic
It's time again for the annual departmental picnic. If you are a CS or math major, might someday be a CS or math major, work for the department as a system administrator, research assistant, grader, prefector, or lab assistant, or are simply a friend of the department or its denizens, you're invited! Take a break from studying at lunchtime on Tuesday, May 30, to eat, drink (lemonade, anyway) and be merry with us. We'll meet at Hill of Three Oaks at noon. Put your name and Sodexho number (if you have one) on the sign-up sheet posted on the glass doors to the department office by noon on Friday, May 26 (we're easy, but Sodexho is not!). If you are off board, that's no problem, but be sure to sign up anyway so we can figure out how much food and drink are needed. Bring your appetite, bring your CS and math friends, bring your 'bee. If you like to cook and want to show off your skills, bring a dish, but this is not required. See you there!
