PROGRAM DATES
June 18 – August 23, 2007
DIRECTOR: Constance Walker, Professor of English
Constance Walker teaches courses on British Romantic literature and Jane Austen, and has previously directed the London Seminar in 1990, 1994, 2000, and 2005.
PREREQUISITES
Two courses in English are normally required, one of which should be English 110 or 111. English 249 is strongly suggested.
LOCATION
The program will spend a week in Louisburgh, Co. Mayo on the West Coast, a month in Dublin, three weeks in Belfast, and a week in Sligo at the Yeats International Summer School.
COURSE OF STUDY, 16 CREDITS
English 290-17: Directed Reading (4 credits, S/CR//NC)
In preparation for the program, students will read selected works on Irish history, literature, and culture.
English 349-07: Modern Irish Poetry, Fiction & Drama (6 credits)
In Dublin, students will read and discuss works by Dubliners O’Connor, O’Casey, O’Brien, Kavanagh, and Beckett; in Belfast, works by Belfast writers Ciaran Carson, Glenn Patterson, and Brian Friel; and in Sligo, poems by Yeats and Seamus Heaney, among others. Instructor: Constance Walker
English 384-07: James Joyce’s Ulysses (6 credits)
Professor Kiberd is an internationally renowned expert on Joyce and Irish literature. He is editor of the Penguin edition of Ulysses and author of two major critical studies: Inventing Ireland and Irish Classics. Instructors: Declan Kiberd & Constance Walker
HOUSING
Students will be housed in self-catering accommodations in all locations.
FACILITIES
Arrangements are being made with University College, Dublin, Queen's University of Belfast, and the Yeats International Summer School, Sligo for the use of libraries, classrooms, recreational facilities, and administrative services.
CLASS SCHEDULE
Classes will normally meet Monday through Thursday mornings. Lectures, readings, trips, and plays may be scheduled at other times.
EXCURSIONS
Group excurions are likely to include trips to Newgrange, Powerscourt, literary sites in Dublin and in Yeats country, the Belfast murals, Giants Causeway, Derry, and the Stone Circle of Beltany. In addition, we will attend several plays at the Abbey and Gate Theatres in Dublin. There will also be ample opportunity for individual travel and exploration within Ireland over weekends and during midterm break.
EXPENSES
Students pay the 2007-2008 Carleton comprehensive fee, which covers the costs of instruction, room, board, and all scheduled excursions. Students are responsible for the cost of books, personal expenses, transportation to and from Ireland, and personal travel during the seminar. Carleton summer term programs carry financial aid. REQUIRED LEAVE OF ABSENCE
The Carleton Ireland Program functions as a Carleton term of the academic year. Participants are normally required to take a leave of absence during the following winter term 2008; juniors should consult with the program director.

Completed applications are due to Constance Walker on or before Friday, January 12, 2007. Notice of acceptance will be given before registration for spring term.
