Study Abroad

Carleton's French Section organizes two off-campus study programs. The first of these, the Paris Program, is intended for students with extensive experience with French. The theme of the program changes each year, the Spring 2009 program is led by Professor Scott Carpenter. The 2009 program is focused on "European Identities," a theme which will be explored via courses in cultural studies, art history, and language, emphasizing the changing cultural make-up of Europe in the 21st century. Partly comparative, the program will contrast Paris and Berlin, and students will spend several days in the German capital as well. The Paris program strives to provide students with a rapid and profound cultural "insertion," helping them achieve personal and intellectual growth -- while making rapid progress in language.

We also offer the Mali Program, led by Professor Chérif Keïta, Professor of Francophone Studies. Professor Keïta says, "For the visitor who is used to the comfort of life in the western world, life in Mali is, to be sure, extremely challenging. But to those who persevere through the first few weeks of adjustment, Mali, of all the countries of the continent, delivers the best rewards in terms of personal growth and of opportunities to connect with the true soul of Africa."

But Carleton students' choices are certainly not limited to these programs. Many programs organized by other schools and organizations are already approved by the College. Here is the short list:

  • SIT's program in Cameroon
  • University of Minnesota's program in Montpellier, France
  • Wellesley-in-Aix, Wellesley College's program in Aix-en-Provence, France
  • New York University's program in Paris
  • SIT's program in Madagascar
  • SIT's program in Toulouse, France
  • The Bryn Mawr College Summer Program Avignon, France
If a student would like to study with another program not already approved by the College, he or she may petition to have a new program approved.
