Geology Guest Speaker - Dr. Daniel Lathrop

"The Study of the Earth's Magnetic Field

Date: Friday, April 20th, 2012

Time: 3:30 pm

Duration: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Location: Mudd 73

Contact: Ellen Haberoth, x4407

Dr. Lathrop is a Professor of Physics, Professor of Geology, and the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Science University of Maryland

For over a decade, University of Maryland geophysicist Dr. Dan Lathrop has been on a quest to construct and run tests on spherical models that simulate the physics of the Earth’s magnetic field. Now completing work on the fourth model, his academic group is close to their biggest feat yet: running rotating sphere with sodium to create a self-generating magnetic field. These tests will contribute to our understanding of the inner workings of the Earth’s core, which in turn  alters our approach to dealing with theeffects of severe solar storms.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME
