research internships in 2012:
Research Experiences in the Solid Earth Sciences for Students (RESESS) is an 11-week paid internship program based in Boulder, Colorado, in which interns do research on a project of interest to them with a scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey, University of Colorado, NOAA, or UNAVCO. The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) is offering two paid summer
research internships in 2012:
Undergraduate Studies in Earthquake Information Technology (UseIT) is an 8-week team-based undergraduate research program that allows students to work in multi-disciplinary collaborative teams to tackle a scientific "Grand Challenge" where they use the advanced tools of information technology to solve important
problems in interdisciplinary earthquake research.

Paid Internships in Geoscience and Policy in Washington DC -

The American Geosciences Institute's Government Affairs Program offers summer and semester internship opportunities for geoscience students (undergraduates and/or Masters students) with an interest in public policy and in how Washington impacts the geoscience community. Interns gain a first-hand understanding of the
legislative process and the operation of executive branch agencies while enhancing their writing, research, and web publishing skills. The deadline for online submission of application is March 15, 2012 for the summer interns, April 15, 2012 for the fall intern and October 15, 2012 for the spring 2013 intern.

The American Geophysical Union, the Soil Science Society of America, the American Institute of Physics, the American  Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society offer similar internships that may be of interest to geoscience students. USEIT (Undergraduate Studies in Earthquake Information Technology)

Work as a team to develop technical tools for scientists, educators, and policy makers to communicate important concepts about earthquakes, faults, seismic hazard mitigation, and earthquake risk reduction.
Term & Location: Summer, University of Southern California
Candidates: Undergraduate sophomores, juniors, and seniors from all majors 

SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience)

Conduct primary field, laboratory, and/or theoretical research under the supervision of leading scientists in the fields of geophysics, earthquake geology, seismology, tectonics, and geodesy.
Term & Location: Summer, various SCEC institutions 

Candidates: Undergraduate juniors and seniors in earth sciences or related fields.

Mount St. Helens Institute Internship Outdoor Recreation: Gain experience in the fields of recreation and interpretation. Interns will act as leaders and support staff for recreational programs, including weekly guided climbs to the rim of Mount St. Helens.
Conservation Corps: Gain experience in the fields of trail maintenance and resource protection. Provide support and leadership to the area’s recreational sites by performing trail and facilities maintenance and repair tasks through one-day, weekend, and week-long volunteer work party projects.
Southside Environmental Education: Gain experience working with youth and adults by developing and leading environmental education related to stream habitat restoration projects. Develop and present
public campfire programs.
Northside Environmental Education: Gain experience working  in a fast paced visitor center setting.  Expand and lead youth programs, lead family friendly hikes and assist visitors at Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.

Field Studies in Geography (GES 446) Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range, Colorado
Earth Corps is a selective field-based program that offers motivated, environmentally conscious students the opportunity to live and learn in the incredible natural classroom of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. The program is designed to integrate key lessons in environmental studies with the completion of a critical environmental restoration project. Run by the Rocky Mountain Field Institute in partnership with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Earth Corps attracts exceptional students from across the nation and the world to participate in this unique service learning opportunity.

The NASA Airborne Science Program invites highly motivated junior and senior undergraduate and early graduate students to apply for participation in the NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP 2012). Participants will fly onboard the NASA P-3B aircraft where they will assist in the operation of instruments to sample and measure atmospheric gases and to image land and water surfaces in multiple spectral bands.  Along with airborne data collection, students will participate in taking measurements at field sites.  Students will work in multi-disciplinary teams to study surface, atmospheric, and oceanographic processes.  Each student will develop his/her own individual research project.

Applications are now being accepted for the summer 2012 Ecosystem Restoration through Interdisciplinary Exchange (ERIE) REU at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Faculty-mentored project topics include stream meander restoration, to management of blue-green algae blooms, to groundwater modeling and phytoremediation, to analysis of pharmaceuticals in wastewater.  For a complete list of projects, please visit http://www.erie.buffalo.edu/REU_projects.php.  Research projects emphasize methods from laboratory/field experimentation and mathematical modeling, and are focused in four areas: (1) Restoration of streams and rivers; (2) Restoration of lakes and bays; (3) Restoration of groundwater and wetland ecosystems; and (4) Engineering for sustainable ecosystems. The State University of New York - New paltz (SUNY-NP) is offering its
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program for the third year
in 2012.
This REU program is funded by the National Science Foundation which provides a challenging eight-week summer experience conducting research in a comprehensive Watershed Characterization approach at SUNY-NP in collaboration with the New York State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
