About the Herbert P. Lefler Endowment for Visiting Speakers in History

The Carleton College History Department is fortunate to have a special lectureship, endowed by Mr. Herbert P. Lefler, a Carleton parent, that allows us to bring prominent working historians to campus who have recently raised important conceptual questions relevant to the entire discipline of history. These visits are integrated into the junior year colloquium (History 298), but they also serve to bring the entire department, indeed the community, together to address issues which span their various individualized, specialized programs. To do this we ask the Lefler visitors to give a public presentation on their most recent research and to conduct a seminar discussion with majors about the key conceptual issues raised in their scholarship. The public presentations are usually forty-five minutes long, followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session.

In preparation for the Lefler seminar majors may read a brief recent article by the visiting scholar. These twice-a-year events are a valuable part of the history major. The aim has been to stimulate discussion among majors on a challenging subject of recent debate in the field that has potential applications for all areas of history and thus for all majors. All junior and senior majors are invited to attend the Lefler Seminar class discussion, and members of both the campus and the greater community are invited to attend the Herbert P. Lefler Public Presentations.

Consequently, historians are chosen who have recently published a book or article(s), which attempts an important reassessment with implications for the study of history across all specializations.
