What is the Departmental Curriculum Committee?
The Department Curriculum Committee (DCC) is made up of two seniors, two juniors, and one faculty adviser/Schedule Tsar, Professor Seungjoo Yoon. The first meeting of the DCC will take place after Professor Yoon has completed a rough draft copy of the 2013-14 course schedule in late February or early March. At that time the DCC meets and discusses the department's curricular changes and long-term needs from the students' perspective. All history majors are invited to give DCC members suggestions & ideas, which can also be solicited by the DCC members.
In late February or early March, we invite you to examine the proposed course schedule and make a note of any changes you would like to see, courses you need to be offered in 2013-14, or any other course suggestions and ideas, discuss them with a DCC member, and/or bring them to the attention of Professor Yoon (syoon@carleton.edu), or e-mail nlambert@carleton.edu. Your needs will be discussed at a History Department meeting related to curriculum discussion.
Through the years, the DCC has helped to fine-tune the History Department course schedule for the next year. For example, when majors have pointed out a need for a History 395 in a field not originally scheduled, or when there is a strong demand from you for a course not offered, the course schedule has been modified. The terms certain classes are offered have been changed to better accommodate your needs. If we are made aware of potential course schedule conflicts that you point out, changes are possible. The History department strongly values student perspective because of majors' helpful suggestions offered in the past. We hope this strong tradition of working together will continue.
Also, if you would like to design a department t-shirt or mug this year, or to do any sort of departmental activity (bowling night, go for History majors hike in Nerstrand woods, a History majors visit to the Historical Society in St. Paul, Saints game field trip, etc.) please tell your DCC and SDA Reps (see also SDAs)!
