Janice Perlman
Janice Perlman’s book, FAVELA: Four Decades of Living on the Edge in Rio de Janeiro, has just been published by Oxford University Press. She has received Guggenheim, Fulbright and C. Wright Mills Awards. She is Founder and President of Mega-Cities, a global non-profit sharing urban innovations. She was a professor of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley and has taught at the Fundacao Getulio Vargas, IBAM and Federal University in Rio de Janeiro.

James W. McGuire is professor in the Department of Government at Wesleyan University. He specializes in comparative politics with a regional focus on Latin America and East Asia and a topical focus on democracy and public health. He is the author of Peronism without Perón: Unions, Parties, and Democracy in Argentina (Stanford, 1997) and of Wealth, Health, and Democracy in East Asia and Latin America (Cambridge, 2010).
