Rehearsals: Monday 3:10-5:00 p.m. (Full Ensemble)
Friday 3:30-5:00 p.m. (Full Ensemble) - MDRC Rehearsal Room
The Carleton Symphony Band performs music from the standard band and wind ensemble repertoire as well as orchestral transcriptions. Recent performances include Vittorio Giannini's Symphony No. 2, Vaughan Williams' Folk Song Suite, Dello Joio's Scenes from Louvre, and MacBeth's Of Sailors and Whales. The band presents a formal concert each term and performs at Commencement. Open admission, placement by audition.
For your Orchestra/Band Audition, you will be asked to perform the following:
1. A major and/or minor scale in a key up to 4 sharps or 4 flats (e.g., C, G, D, A, E, F, Bb, Eb, Ab major and relative minors).
2. A prepared piece of your choice. This could be a concerto, solo piece, etude, or ensemble part that you prepared in high school or in private lessons.
3. The excerpts are provided on the website. These are different for each instrument. Go to the Music Department website for these excerpts (https://apps.carleton.edu/curricular/musc/students/audition/).
4. We will also have you sight read a short excerpt from the orchestra and band literature.
Auditions usually take about 10 minutes, and we try to make these as informal and “user friendly” as possible. Still, good preparation always makes for a less-stressful audition experience, so we encourage you to come prepared!
