Guest Artist Concert: SETHU (BRIDGE)

Ragamala Artistic Director Ranee Ramaswamy brings together Bharatanatyam (classical dance from southern India), Balinese kecak (the famous “monkey chant” rarely heard outside of Indonesia), Balinese dance and Javanese Gamelan, and a south Indian orchestra to bring this captivating spectacle to life. The 2004 premiere of SETHU drew an audience of nearly 6,000! With this presentation, Ragamala brings a newly enhanced, indoor staging of SETHU to the Carleton stage after its international premiere at the Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar, Indonesia (July, 2006). Commissioned by the Walker Art Center. Concept by Ranee Ramaswamy. Created in collaboration with I Dewa Putu Berata of the Bali-based gamelan ensemble Cudamani. Live music by Joko Sutrisno and the IPAAM Gamelan Ensemble and a south Indian orchestra led by vocalist Nirmala Rajasekar. Featuring Aparna Ramaswamy and the dancers from Ragamala.
