Inspired by Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey, Sarah Kirkland Snider’s song cycle PENELOPE is a meditation on memory, identity and what it means to come home. Musical influences are as diverse as St. Vincent, Neutral Milk Hotel, Wilco, Arvo Pärt and Sibelius. The lyrics were penned by celebrated playwright and Columbia University Greek scholar Ellen McLaughlin. This concert features vocalist Shara Worden, of the experimental-pop band My Brightest Diamond. Worden's performances mix elements of opera, cabaret, chamber music and rock. She shares the stage with conservatory-trained/pop-savvy chamber ensemble yMusic - "one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music." Presented in cooperation with the SPCO's Liquid Music Series.
The Laudie D. Porter Memorial Fund was established in 1986 by the family and friends of Laudie Porter, Assistant Professor of Flute at Carleton from 1968 until her death in 1986. The fund is used each year to bring to cam¬pus a distinguished performing or creative artist for a visit devoted both to performance and discus-sion.
