Laudie Porter Recital: Jazz Trio, Laura Caviani, piano Joan Griffith, guitar and mandolin Dave Schmalenberger, percussion
The trio will perform selections from their 2008 release “SambaNova,” which includes original compositions using examples of samba, bossa nova, baiao, and choro, along with arrangements of some of Brazil’s most lauded composers, including Jobim, Mariano and Delmira. A noted teacher, composer and performer, Ms. Griffith heads the Jazz Studies Department at the University of St. Thomas and also directs the MacJazz Workshop at Macalester College. Dr. Schmalenberger co-chairs the Percussion Department at McNally Smith College in St. Paul, and specializes in traditional African music.
