Adjunct Faculty Guidebook
The Adjunct Faculty Guidebook is a general guide to administrative procedures and practices of the Department of Music (as well as various such practices of the College). The information in the Guidebook is subject to change without notice at any time, and may be modified in its application as deemed appropriate by the College to address the individual circumstances of any specific situation. Therefore, the Guidebook is not a contract and does not affect or supersede any term of your adjunct faculty contract.

Student Fees and Financial Aid
As of Fall 2005, student lesson fees are as follows:
• $225 for nine half-hour lessons (two credits) per term
• $450 for nine hour lessons (four credits) per term
• $55 for Class Voice, Class Guitar, Intermediate Class Guitar and Class African Drum per term
Four credit (one hour) lessons require the permission of the instructor, and first-year students are discouraged from taking four credit lessons save in exceptional cases. Fees are assessed after the Drop/Add period, and are not refundable for late drops except when a late drop is made for medical reasons or in similar emergency situations.
Financial aid is available to those students who, because of limited resources, would not be able to finance the cost of applied music lesson fees. Further details can be found in the "Information and Guidelines for Applied Music Study" form (see Appendices section).

Payments for Applied Music Lessons
Contracts for teaching are sent to adjunct faculty prior to the academic year or term in which they will teach. As enrollments warrant, the contract may or may not state a guaranteed payment for a given number of students. The contract may include a payment-per-student clause. Adjunct faculty residing outside the Northfield area are offered mileage allowances which will be delineated in the contract letter.
Payments are generally made monthly (ten or twelve months per year) or by the term. Payments are made based upon enrollment as it is established by the end of the Drop/Add period (generally the end of the second week of the term). Thus, if a student drops lessons before the end of the Drop/Add period, that student is not counted in the adjunct faculty member’s teaching load. Adjunct faculty will, however, be compensated for all lessons taught to any student who drops during the Drop/Add period. In those instances where an instructor teachers 1-2 lessons at the beginning of the term, and then drops, the instructor should contact the Applied Music Program Administrator to arrange payment. Note that if a student drops lessons after the end of the Drop/Add period, that student will be counted in the adjunct faculty member’s teaching load and the instructor will be paid accordingly.
If an adjunct faculty member teaches more students during a particular term than is provided for in his or her contract, an additional fee is paid for that “overload” teaching. Payment for overload teaching will be made at the end of each term. If, however, an adjunct faculty member's teaching load falls beneath their contracted number of lessons during a particular term, he or she will nonetheless be paid based on the “guaranteed minimum” in their contract. However, in the following term(s) payment for subsequent “overloads” (above their contracted number of lessons) will not be made until additional teaching compensates for their previous “underload”. Calculations for underload are not carried over from one academic year to the next.
Below are some examples of how the overload/underload procedure might work:
If an adjunct faculty member is contracted to teach six hours each term, and in Fall teaches four hours, in Winter six hours, and in Spring eight hours, payment would be made, following the contract, for six hours each term. Since an underload of two hours occurred in Fall, no extra payment would be made for the two hours of overload teaching in Spring.
If an adjunct faculty member is contracted to teach six hours each term, and in Fall teaches four hours, in Winter six hours, and in Spring ten hours, payment would be made, following the contract, for six hours each term, plus two hours of additional teaching for Spring.

Ensemble Participation (“Ringers”)
Occasionally, adjunct faculty members may be invited to perform with the Department's ensembles, such as the Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, or Choirs. Fees for these services are paid separately. The fee is related to the size of the performing obligation undertaken. When adjunct faculty perform with departmental ensembles, they will negotiate with the ensemble director regarding number of rehearsals and the instructor’s fee for such performance services.
