Drop/Add, Leaves, Declaring a Major, Writing Portfolio

Dropping and/or Adding Courses

Carleton seminars are considered a package. No single course may be dropped from the program, and no overloads are accepted. Off-campus courses may be dropped or added according to the sponsoring program’s policies. However, you must remain registered for the equivalent of at least 12 Carleton credits and you cannot exceed the number of credits approved.

Taking a Leave of Absence

If you choose to extend your study abroad experience with a leave of absence, you must submit a Student Petition for Consideration to the Dean of Students Office. See the Academic Regulations and Procedures booklet for more information.

Declaring Your Major (during your sophomore year)

When you are a sophomore, you are required to declare your major before departure on a spring off-campus program.

Writing Portfolio Requirement (during your sophomore year)

Sophomores must complete their writing portfolios before the end of that year. If you plan to study off-campus during your sophomore year or during fall term your junior year, complete your portfolio and submit it to the Write Place before you leave campus. For more information, see
