Program Description
COURSE OF STUDY, 16 CREDITS
Students enroll in two regular courses and an additional independent reading course for a total of 16 credits
CAMS 290: GENIUS LOCI: CULTURAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES ON PLACE AND LOCATION(4 CREDITS)
This is a self-directed summer course in which assigned materials and projects should be completed prior to departure. The course will provide students with a broad understanding of key issues and ideas central to the seminar. Students will create blogs and post creative projects as part of this summer class.
CAMS 252: UNDERSTANDING NEW MEDIA
(6 CREDITS)
CAMS 273: DIGITAL WORKSHOP
(6 CREDITS)
Creative new media projects will be tailored to each student’s skill set and technical resources, and students will be encouraged to work in teams where appropriate. Descriptive and conceptual or web-based projects in photography will be at the center of the seminar, but students may also work in video and other new media forms. Students are encouraged to take an introductory course in a medium of their choice at Carleton before the seminar.
PREREQUISITES
The Seminar is open to any regular Carleton student, but preference will be given to those majoring in Cinema & Media Studies, those who have taken courses in the department, or students with a demonstrated interest in new media. Ideally students will have taken a production class in photography, video or audio, but this is not required. A class (or personal reading) in Contemporary Art History will provide valuable background and vocabulary. There is no special language requirement.
LODGING & EXCURSIONS
The seminar will spend roughly three weeks in each of three cities. Students will stay in double, triple or quadruple rooms in a carefully selected residential hotel or international student housing. While we may take an occasional side trip outside our four cities, such trips will be neither frequent nor extensive. Where possible, the seminar will designate an open long weekend in each city so that students wishing to travel elsewhere in a particular country may do so at their own expense.
