Medical Emergencies

In an extreme medical emergency, first get medical treatment from local sources. Be aware that you will probably have to pay for treatment up front and submit a claim to your insurance company later.

Students on Carleton seminars, are covered by emergency insurance through SOS International which can provide medical referrals and evacuation assistance. For students on non-Carleton programs, your program staff in country will assist you. You can also contact the OCS office or one of the numbers listed on your fact sheet for advice and assistance.

If immediate medical treatment is not necessary, you may also call the nearest Embassy or Consulate to get advice about what to do next, including notifying local police or finding English-speaking doctors.

In case of a death your faculty director or program staff in country, in consultation with staff at Carleton College, will assist in everyway possible. In addition, the US Embassy or Consulate will notify next of kin and work with local authorities to comply with local regulations.
