Health Precautions

Glasses and lenses: If you wear glasses, take an extra pair or have a record of your glasses prescription. Bring an extra pair of contact lenses and enough cleaning solution for the length of your stay, particularly in developing countries. Syringes and needles necessary for medications must be accompanied by a doctor's letter.

Prescriptions: If you use prescription drugs, have them refilled shortly before you leave, so they are fresh. Keep them in their original, labeled containers and pack them in your carry-on luggage, not in checked baggage. Bring enough medication for the duration of your stay, and be wary of buying drugs abroad. Feminine hygiene products and contraceptives may be in short supply or unavailable in certain countries.

HIV Testing: While not widespread, testing for HIV may be required in some countries prior to arrival or upon arrival. Check with the country's consulate about their requirements before you leave or call the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1-800-342-AIDS, or contact the American Social Health Association.
