Travel Safety Resources

A list of government travel warnings from 10 countries can be found at the following site: http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/travel_warning.htm. These warnings contain security information for most countries in the world.

In addition, students and faculty on Carleton programs can call International SOS for a personalized security report on the areas they intend to visit.

The US State Department has many resources for travelers, in particular:

  • A section specifically for students abroad which includes emergency contact numbers by country (think 911), what to do if you are a victim of a crime or natural disaster, or need to be evacuated: http://studentsabroad.state.gov/.
  • An iPhone app with frequently updated official country information, travel alerts, travel warnings, maps, US Embassy locations, and more: (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/smart-traveler/id442693988?mt=8)
  • Detailed Tips for Traveling Abroad, including sections on having a safe trip, enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) (OCS does this for all Carleton programs), links to country guides, and consular information: http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/tips_1232.htm.

Journeywoman is an excellent resource on women’s travel safety (most tips can apply to men too!) http://www.journeywoman.com/
