Program Description

Prof. Mary Easter, Faculty Director

Fall and winter term courses plus December winter break field trip

Fall term 2006:
a course on Black Dance: an historical survey through movement, readings, and guest lecture-performances. The essence of the program is understanding and tracing the transmission of West African cultures from their places of origin across the Atlantic and through time to the present day United States (indeed to the world) through dance traditions, modes, and developments. Despite collisions and mergings with other cultures, the "African thread" in dance remains alive and visible in the world of "high art" and dominant in the world of vernacular dance.

Winter break field trip to Jamaica and winter term 2007:
