Academic Year 2005-2006
Between June 2005 and early June 2006:
- Carleton officially enrolled 1,936 students.
- 380 students, or 20% of the student body, participated in off-campus studies 402 times for academic credit during the academic year, the December winter break, and in the summer.
- 361 students, or 19% of the student body earned off-campus study credit outside the United States.
Participation in domestic and international programs during the academic year 2005-2006:
- Students studied off-campus on 105 different programs in 49 countries.
- 50% of the students participated in programs in Europe, 15% in Asia, 11% in Latin America, 9% in Australia & Oceania, 8% in Africa, 6% in the United States and 1% in the Middle East. Compared with participation rates in 2004-2005, Africa rose 5% and Asia, Latin America and the United States each rose 2%. The participation rate for Australia/Oceania remained the same, while that of Europe declined by 4%.
- 94% of students studying off-campus participated in one program, and 6% participated in two programs during the year.
- By class year, 23% of the participants were seniors, 53% juniors, and 24% sophomores.
- 62% of the participants studied on Carleton seminars, 6% on consortia programs, and 32% on programs sponsored by other U.S. institutions or foreign universities.
- Participation in programs of varying lengths ranged from 11% on programs less than one term, including Carleton winter break programs, 57% on one-term programs (10 weeks), 30% on semester-long programs, and 2% on academic year-long programs of 9 months or more.
- Women’s and men’s participation rates were 58% and 42%, respectively.
As in previous years, Carleton faculty took an active role in off-campus studies as directors for off-campus programs and winter break field trips. Fourteen faculty members directed Carleton off-campus study program in 2005-2006. Directors of Carleton programs included Mike Hemesath, Greg Hewett, Humberto Huergo, Cameron Davidson, Linda Rossi, Anne Ulmer, Phil Camill, Clint Cowan, Cherif Keita, Silvia L. Lopez, Jay Levi, Nancy Cho, Eva Posfay and Roy Grow.
This report covers students who earned Carleton credit on off-campus academic programs. It does not report students who also earned Carleton independent study credits for academic work off campus. A number of students were also involved in volunteer projects, work abroad, domestic and international field camps in geology, biology and archeology, and travel. The attached statistical tables, combined with the annual “Class of 2006 Participation in Off-Campus Studies” report, provide an in-depth view of off-campus studies at Carleton College.
