Applying to a program

Feasibility of an Off-Campus Study Program

If you can answer "yes" to the following questions, you are ready to apply for an off-campus program:

  1. Am I eligible for an off-campus studies program (adequate GPA, residency requirements for transfer students, language or other academic prerequisites, etc.)?
  2. Have I talked to OCS staff and/or my academic adviser about integrating my off-campus program into my major and assuring myself that I can fulfill my distribution and graduation credit requirements?
  3. Can I afford to study off-campus?
  4. Do I want to study off-campus for a term, a semester, a year, or during the summer?
  5. Will I receive enough credits from my off-campus program?
  6. Are they transferable to my Carleton transcript?
  7. Am I excited about the program and the site I'm considering?
  8. Is it where I want to spend my time, money, and energy?

Applications for Programs

Carleton Seminars
Faculty members teaching Carleton seminars are primary sources of information about those courses and application processes. Application forms are available in the office of the academic department responsible for the seminar and the OCS office, as well as online by visiting the Carleton Seminar sites. Applications include the student's academic adviser's signature, personal references, a personal statement of intent, a transcript, and/or other information. Program directors often interview applicants. Deadlines for the applications are published on the form itself, the OCS calendar, and the Deadlines section of our website.

Affiliated Programs
Application forms are available in a variety of locations. The OCS Office has applications for HECUA, DIS, and Kansai Gaidai as well as many others. Carleton faculty who serve as ACM, AKP, and ISLE advisers have specific program applications. If the applications are not available on campus or on-line, they can be obtained from the sponsoring institutions. Allow enough time to send for the application, complete it, and return it by its stated deadline, especially if it is going overseas. You will also need to submit a Petition form to receive approval from Carleton for the program.

Unaffiliated Programs
Application forms are available from the sponsoring school or organization. You are responsible for getting the application form, completing it, and returning it by its stated deadline. You will also need to submit a Petition form to receive approval from Carleton for the program.

Notification about Applications

Carleton Seminars
You will receive a letter from the program director indicating that you have been accepted into the program, refused, or placed on a list of alternates.

Non-Carleton Programs
You will be notified by your program. If your petition has been approved, but you are not accepted into the program, be sure to notify the OCS office that you will return to campus. You will be able to register for classes as usual, and you will be guaranteed housing.
