Carleton Biogeoscience in Belize - Winter Break 2012
This program will focus on tropical marine and marginal marine organisms and their interactions with the physical environments. The goal is to better understand the tropical reef, mangrove and seagrass ecosystems and the stresses being placed upon them. Fieldwork will be an essential part of our study, and the program is designed to appeal to students interested in biology, geology and environmental science.

Carleton Conservation and Development Seminar in Tanzania and Ethiopia - Winter 2013
Tanzania and Ethiopia are excellent places to study the conflict between conservation and development. Tanzania has one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in the world while the majority of the population lives in poverty. Similarly, Ethiopia is one of the twelve centers of crop genetic diversity in the world. Students will stay and work out of rustic places. The academic program will largely be centered on directed learning modules and independent fieldwork; teamwork will be emphasized. Visits to cultural sites and interactions with Tanzanian and Ethiopian scientists will be important aspects of the program.

Carleton Geology Seminar in New Zealand - Winter 2012
New Zealand is an amazing place to study Geology. Plate tectonic processes are active and happening in real time. New Zealand also has a rich Gondwanan heritage. This program will travel throughout the North and South Islands, and visit a range of settings from mountains and glaciers, to terraced coastal plains and adjacent shoreline and shallow marine environments. We will stay and work out of rustic field stations and hostels. The academic program will largely be centered on directed learning modules and independent fieldwork; teamwork will be emphasized. Visits to cultural sites and interactions with New Zealand scientists will be important aspects of our studies.

Earth and the Environment in Italy
The Earth and Environment in Italy program is designed for students who are looking for a rigorous program built around field-based projects that focus on the interactions between the major earth systems: the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere (including humans). Based out of the Osservatorio Geologico di Coldigioco, we take advantage of our central location in the Marche region of Italy to take extended field trips to study the Dolomites in the Italian Alps, the famous Carrara marbles of Tuscany and the rugged coastal settlements of neighboring Croatia. Students have additional opportunities to travel throughout Italy and neighboring countries as part of their independent research projects and on days off from the academic program.

From Mountain to Fjord | |||
The study has a main focus on the geology and ecology of western Norway. The location of the campus, by the shores of the Sogndalsfjord - a tributary of the famous Sognefjord- offers a unique natural laboratory for fieldwork and research. The landscape spans across a variety of eco systems over very short distances, ranging from alpine through lowland into the marine fjord environment. The course is interdisciplinary and consists of three main blocks, involving a total of 21 days of fieldwork and excursion on land and on fjords. The course focuses on the interaction of ecological documentation and geological source interpretation within the changing environment.

Frontiers Abroad: Earth Systems in New Zealand
The Earth Systems programme analyzes current environmental issues arising from the interface between nature and society. The five-week field camp begins on the beaches and coral reefs of Rarotonga (Cook Islands) studying marine and coastal ecology. The programme then transitions to mainland New Zealand to study geothermal energy, kaitiakitanga, and learn environmental field techniques (water sampling, Ground Penetrating Radar, VibraCore). Earth Systems students can choose to attend the University of Auckland or the University of Canterbury, where they enroll in four courses, one of which is a research methods course based upon data collected in field camp.four courses, one of which is a research methods course based upon data collected in field camp.

Frontiers Abroad: Geology in New Zealand
The Geology of New Zealand Programme (Geology) begins with a five-week field camp, a series of mapping exercises and interlinked modules, that explores the stratigraphy, mountain building, and tectonics of the South Island and the volcanology and geothermal geology of the North Island. Following field-camp students transition to a campus semester at the University of Canterbury located in Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. While at the University of Canterbury students enroll in four courses, one of which is a research methods course based upon data collected in field camp.

SEA Semester | |||
By coming to SEA, you can get a semester’s credit for a 12-week program that takes place half on shore and half at sea. Our interdisciplinary program begins in Woods Hole, one of the world’s great centers for ocean research. Here you will study the chemistry, biology, physics, and geology of the oceans and you will design your own research project that you will carry out at sea. You will learn the history and culture of mariners who for centuries have gone to sea, an ancient tradition that you will join. You will discuss the major policy issues that will be tomorrow’s headlines. And you will learn what it requires to take a vessel under sail safely to the deep ocean and to international ports.
