The ACM Botswana program is expressly designed for students with interests in politics, political economy, economic and social development, public health, and environmental studies. Housed at the University of Botswana in Gaborone, Botswana’s capital, the program is offered each spring semester, and combines formal class study with site visits to places in and around Gaborone and an independent research project.

The ACM Brazil: Semester Exchange Programs are available to students from the 14 colleges in the ACM consortium. For each ACM student who participates, a Brazilian student will spend a semester at the corresponding ACM campus, creating a two-way student exchange. There are two distinct exchange program options available to students looking to spend a semester studying in Brazil: Liberal Arts & Sciences exchange program (UFJF) and Environmental Studies exchange program (UFJF or UnB). Students participating in either of the Brazil Exchange program options will take intensive Portuguese. Those participating in the spring semester will enroll in an intensive two-week Portuguese language class at UFJF prior to the start of their university semester. (For students who choose to participate in the fall semester, other arrangements will be made to provide some type of intensive Portuguese language instruction.) Throughout the university semester, students will then continue their Portuguese language studies.

The ACM Chicago Program engages students academically, professionally, and personally with this dynamic city. The primary areas of emphasis in the program are Arts, Entrepreneurship, and Urban Studies – students have the opportunity to explore one of these topics in depth, or participate in classwork and projects across these disciplines. The program offers an innovative mix of academic work, including an internship, independent study project, common core course about the city of Chicago, and a variety of seminars focused on the arts and creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, and urban studies and social justice. The spring ACM Costa Rica program has given students a privileged window onto these developments since the program’s founding in 1964. The American Councils Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) The academic program is designed to improve participants’ oral, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in Russian language and to develop their knowledge of Russian history, politics, culture, and society. The programs provide approximately twenty hours per week of in-class instruction in Russian grammar, phonetics, conversation, and cultural studies at Moscow International University, the Russian State Pedagogical University (Gertsen Institute) in St. Petersburg, and the KORA Center for Russian Language in Vladimir. Students enrolled in AMIDEAST’s Education Abroad Program in Amman will have opportunities to study all Arabic and North African/Middle Eastern cultural and contemporary issues in a program based at AMIDEAST’s facilities in Amman’s Sweifieh district. AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program courses in Amman are taught by a select group of Jordanian professors from a variety of institutions in and around Amman. These lecturers possess a strong instructional experience in English-speaking environments.

The core of each student's academic program is a six-credit seminar: History, Politics, and Diplomacy of France and Europe. The course will incorporate academic research projects and field study excursions that will take full advantage of many French, European, and international institutions discussed in the classroom. A major component of the core course is the capstone project that will enable students to do research in many areas of current events in Paris and Europe. In addition to the mandatory core course and French language study, the program offers electives in African, European, and French international relations, politics, and government. Bard College's Globalization and International Affairs (BGIA) Program provides a unique opportunity for university students and recent graduates from around the world to engage in the study and practice of: international law; international relations theory; global public health; political economy; international reporting; and other aspects of international affairs. BGIA is a small and highly selective program for 30 students each semester and 22 students each summer. BGIA was co-founded by the late James Clarke Chace, a diplomatic historian, former Managing Editor of Foreign Affairs, and the Paul W. The curriculum for the Film Production program is entirely integrated so that all courses work toward the production of a super 16mm narrative or documentary film, which students create in small groups. In the fall semester, students with previous production experience may apply to work in 35mm. Space on the 35mm program is limited and is granted on a competitive basis. This program is designed for students interested in learning and studying about sound tropical conservation and sustainable development to ensure future biodiversity and human welfare. This program is appropriate for students with a background in Arabic or French who have a strong interest in developing their Arabic language skills while learning firsthand about contemporary Morocco. Through a combination of Arabic language and area studies courses taught in English and French, students gain significant insight into Moroccan society, politics, literature, and religion, and Morocco’s relationships with the West and within the Arab world. The program is designed for a wide array of academic disciplines including Arabic language, Francophone studies, African studies, comparative literature, religion, and international relations.

The Development Studies program offers students the opportunity to learn firsthand about development issues in a French-speaking West African country and introduces students to Senegalese society and to such issues as education, politics, and the impact of Islam. With the exception of the required Wolof language course, all courses are taught in French, giving advanced language students the opportunity to use French daily in and out of the classroom.

If you are interested or majoring in French/Francophone studies, African studies, international relations, or development studies and are seeking an opportunity to live and study in a French-speaking West African country considered by many to be one of the most developed and democratic nations in that region, then this program is right for you. The program is geared toward students interested in continuing French language study and learning Wolof, while taking other courses in English and having a cultural immersion experience.

Drawing on a wealth of resources in Barcelona, the Architecture and Design study abroad program at the CIEE Study Center in Barcelona aims to offer students a unique cultural perspective on the history and practice of architecture and design in contemporary Spain. The Architecture track is offered in English. For the Design track, students must have four semesters of college-level Spanish and their coursework is in English and Spanish.

This program is designed for students with two years of college-level Russian who wish to improve their proficiency with the Russian language. This is an intensive program that focuses on all language skills. This program is designed for students who want to study Kiswahili language and learn firsthand about Tanzania and its people through CIEE courses at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). Through a combination of CIEE and UDSM language and area studies courses and CIEE excursions and community-engagement opportunities, students gain a better understanding of Tanzania and its important role in East Africa.

The Community Public Health program in Thailand provides an attractive option for students interested in studying community health issues and public health policy in an Asian context—in English—coupled with learning Thai as a second language. Thailand, a country known for its innovative public health system, provides a near perfect environment for students interested in an intensive and integrated immersion experience to examine issues of public health and social services on both a regional and national level through academic lectures from public health faculty coupled with site visits to communities, NGOs, and Ministry of Public Health projects.

The CIEE Study Center in Khon Kaen will allow you to engage in a unique real-world learning model and be exposed to many issues—the effects of dams and mining, urban slums, people living with HIV/AIDS, organic farming, human rights, and NGOs—from a grassroots perspective. You will become involved in an authentic exchange with villagers, NGOs, and others working for social change through site visits and hands-on field work. Finally you will get to immerse yourself in the culture through community stays, translated exchanges, Thai student roommates, peer tutors, and intensive group work.

Through CIEE Brazil you will: learn Portuguese through a four-week intensive language and culture program prior to the semester, followed by semester-long language courses at various levels; enroll in CIEE courses in Afro-Brazilian studies, with a focus on race, class, anthropology, and culture; and participate in cultural and educational activities, including visits to a Candomblé ceremony, and an excursion to Rio de Janeiro.

The program is intended for students who have an interest in the Czech Republic and Central Europe, as well as in the political, social, and/or economic transformation from state control to democratic market-based systems. You will get the chance to take a broad and challenging range of courses supplemented by prominent guest lectures by leading Czech political, economic, religious, and social figures; courses include numerous out-of-class field trips and activities. You will have the opportunity to enroll in courses at FAMU, one of the most prominent and renowned film schools in Europe. The College Year in Athens experience is designed to guide students to a greater understanding and appreciation of Greece—ancient, medieval and modern—and the surrounding region. The program of studies juxtaposes the history and contributions of ancient Greece with the Greece of today: a country situated at the confluence of Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, partaking of the culture of her neighbors to the north, east and south, and bound to them by history and geography. The Center for University Programs Abroad specializes in study abroad exclusively in Paris. CUPA’s offices and classrooms are located in the heart of Montparnasse, on the Left Bank, close to the Luxembourg Gardens. The program is conducted entirely in French, and there is no instruction in English. All students follow the advanced immersion program. The European Humanities program is home to a broad array of unique courses in history, literature, art, music, cultural theory, religion and philosophy. The course selection is designed to allow students the greatest degree of academic independence and individual focus. Students will learn about European history and culture by focusing on how selective ways of remembering Europe’s past – the rich as well as tragic heritage — has shaped collective and individual identities. The Public Health program is designed for students exploring career opportunities in public health, either from a policy, sociology, or pre-med background. The core course and study tours offer you a Northern European perspective on salient aspects of public health, e.g. prevention, health promotion and quality improvement, an understanding of the challenges of health policy making, prioritization, and health economics, and the ability to derive comparative insight from analysis of different national health care systems.

The Science & the Environment program allows you to explore climate change and other environmental issues by learning from climate history. You will develop deeper knowledge of climate history in order to understand climate change theory, and you will also examine how civilization has played a critical role in creating the earth we live on today.

The Sociology program presents you with both first-hand and analytical insight into the relation between cultural diversity and social capital in Europe and Turkey. In this context, you will do research on phenomena such as globalization, immigration, integration, social cohesion, struggles for recognition and the limits of tolerance.

The Sustainability in Europe program is designed for students of environmental studies, environmental science, management, public policy, and students generally interested in environmental affairs. The core course and study tours will enhance your understanding of the divergent goals and processes connected with sustainable development. You will be introduced to a broad range of Danish and European stakeholders currently shaping the sustainability agenda, and encouraged to identify your own values and strategies for a sustainable future.

The program offers an excellent opportunity to study the rich Russian culture, civilization, and language of Tolstoy, Chekhov, Dostoyevsky, and Pushkin. Offered in cooperation with St. Petersburg State University, the program is available in both fall and spring. A summer program is available as well. The academic program consists of four intensive courses in Russian language, culture, history, and media taught by Russian faculty from St. Petersburg State University, one of Russia’s oldest and preeminent universities. The Earth Systems programme analyzes current environmental issues arising from the interface between nature and society. The five-week field camp begins on the beaches and coral reefs of Rarotonga (Cook Islands) studying marine and coastal ecology. The programme then transitions to mainland New Zealand to study geothermal energy, kaitiakitanga, and learn environmental field techniques (water sampling, Ground Penetrating Radar, VibraCore). The Geology of New Zealand Programme (Geology) begins with a five-week field camp, a series of mapping exercises and interlinked modules, that explores the stratigraphy, mountain building, and tectonics of the South Island and the volcanology and geothermal geology of the North Island. Following field-camp students transition to a campus semester at the University of Canterbury located in Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. While at the University of Canterbury students enroll in four courses, one of which is a research methods course based upon data collected in field camp.

Mahidol University International College (MUIC) was established to deliver English-taught degree programs that embody the finest standards possible to a diverse population of full-time students from Thailand and around the world. Programs in the social sciences, business, and tourism management stand alongside offerings in health and natural sciences. In addition to these, the College offers general education courses in foreign languages and humanities. The MUIC is located at Mahidol University’s Salaya campus on 500 acres of managed land, including parklands and sports facilities. Salaya is a thriving campus town and residential suburb of Bangkok. The center of Bangkok is only 20km from campus. Although most MUIC students are Thai, there are also students from over 40 different countries attending Mahidol University. Students enroll in three regular courses and an additional independent reading course. Classes will be held at the Colegio Mayor Universitario San Juan Evangelista, one of several residencias (halls of residence or dorms) located at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. In order for students to immerse themselves in Spanish life and language, students will stay with carefully selected Spanish families. Cultural activities, speakers, and excursions within Madrid will supplement course work. In addition, there will be four major excursions to Toledo (one night and two days), Cordoba and Seville (three nights and four days), and Barcelona (three nights and four days).

The program is designed for second year undergraduate students and upwards, graduate students and professionals interested in acquiring a knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic. The program is based on the principle of total immersion – the constant and exclusive use of a language in its native social and cultural environment. Studies combine formal classes, interaction with native speakers outside the classroom and exposure to the religious and cultural elements that have left their indelible mark on the Arabic language.

The Community Internships in Latin America (CILA) program is a semester of study and experience with a focus on community participation and social change. The program addresses current issues of globalization, ecological issues, oil politics and Plan Colombia, and students learn from individuals who help make change happen. Models of community participation, organization, development and social change are compared and contrasted. A homestay is combined with a hands-on internship and independent study opportunity designed to meet individualized learning goals. A field seminar involving local experts and activists provides an intensive immersion into Latin American daily life and culture. In addition to substantive work at internship sites working on health, youth development, women’s issues, environment, human rights or other issues, students experience Ecuador’s diverse culture through field studies in indigenous communities and the rain forest. Students learn first-hand about challenges in Ecuadorian communities and explore ways they are being addressed.

Today, Northern Ireland offers an example of the vast dimensions of transition from conflict to democracy. Students examine the historical, political and religious roots of the conflict in Northern Ireland, the prospects for peace, and the progress being made. Through readings, lectures, discussions, internships, group and independent study projects and field experiences this program invites interaction with people involved in social change. The program explores theoretical approaches to understanding conflict and its transformation as well as the processes underway in Northern Ireland to create a sustainable democracy. Field seminars focus on human rights, equality, conflict transformation and education for democracy and help students see in action the tools used to transform conflict. A seven-week internship, either in Belfast or Londonderry/Derry, allows students to be directly involved in efforts toward a peaceful future. The diverse perspectives gained at the internship will help students explore how society is progressing and analyze the cultural traditions and resources available for building a sustainable and inclusive democracy. Internship sites ultimately provide an opportunity to do meaningful work that makes a difference. Some organizations are grassroots with a local focus, while others are international in scope. Finally, each student carries out an independent study project on a topic of her/his choice, which includes field research. NOTE: Fall program begins in 2014.

Using the vibrant arts scene of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Art for Social Change: Intersections of Art, Identity, and Advocacy program immerses students in the study of artists and communities using art to inspire social change. In Art for Social Change, a wide variety of creative practices are embraced as essential tools for civic engagement, participatory democracy and direct action. Through lively dialogues in classroom seminars, field visits with the Twin Cities' most influential community-based artists, and a professional internship, Art for Social Change students explore how art and culture impact communities and how creative work (performance, writing, visual art, music, etc.) has the power to address pressing social issues and make them visible and real. The program uses current events and recent history to examine subjects like social and cultural identity, war, racial injustice, poverty, and ecological devastation. As a class, students grapple with questions like, what is the role and responsibility of the artist in response to these issues? How can art bring people together across difference? Can art save lives? What are the ethics behind community based-art? How do you use/introduce/infuse art in communities that are not your own? Is art a necessity or a luxury? Throughout the semester students meet with a wide variety of local artists, educators, and arts advocates in addition to attending performances, films and installations that evoke deeper investigations into these questions. Art for Social Change is designed for and by people who believe that the most powerful learning happens through the application and manifestation of ideas into the streets. Students are guided and inspired by artists of all disciplines to design and implement creative work that interacts with the public realm. After being exposed to a myriad of artists and activists who, on small or large scales, ask their art to wake people up, to get people to talk to each other, to light a spark of truth, or to contribute more beauty to the world, students will also be given opportunities for their voices to contribute to movement of creativity and justice. In addition to students experimenting with their creative work, they will also be exposed to the business of being an artist and learn grant-writing skills as well as the organizations that exist to support the professional development of individual and community-based artists throughout their creative careers. Art for Social Change equips students with a comprehensive overview of the arts and activism that is happening locally so that students are empowered to find the purpose and place of their own unique voice.

In the Inequality in America: Policy, Community, and the Politics of Empowerment program students actively delve into major challenges of our time: poverty, inequality and social change. The program pursues three major framing questions utilizing a number of relevant and contested theories to frame the discussion throughout the semester. The questions are: What are some of the root causes of increasing levels of economic, political, social inequality and insecurity and how does this impact all social classes and groups in the United States? How are economic, political, and social inequality reproduced? How do we create more opportunity for all Americans squeezed by economic, political, and social inequality and what are some concrete social change tools for making these changes? To understand these questions the program looks at the economy, housing systems, education, welfare, government policies, urban sprawl, regional race and class segregation, and institutional discrimination. Connecting these issues is at the core of the program. Instead of just learning about these problems, students explore solutions and become engaged in organizations committed to social transformation. Students have direct conversations and work with practitioners in government, the private sector, nonprofit social change organizations, academia, labor unions, schools, and other community institutions that in one way or another claim to be addressing some aspect of economic, political, and social inequality and poverty. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota is increasingly diverse and in some areas still has a strong and vibrant economy, yet many people are not sharing in this vitality. As in most large urban regions there is a growing gap between the rich and poor, increasing geographic and social segregation and polarization between these groups. Forty-five percent of the children in the “core” of the Twin Cities live at or below the poverty line, and an educational gap between racial groups worries many policymakers, parents, educators and students. Through critical thinking set into action, HECUA students analyze policy, lobby elected officials and engage communities. This program focuses on learning the basics of organizing in communities and workplaces, persuading others to become critically engaged, and learning to act as an effective advocate for issues and people. Building these skills is valuable for social change.

IFE is a Paris-based educational organization offering semester-long academic programs that make use of the professional workplace as a learning space for perfecting French language skills and acquiring in-depth cross-cultural knowledge in France and Europe. Spanish language and culture classes in Merida, Mexico. The IFSA-Butler orientation includes a day trip to the archaeological site of Dzibilchanltun and to the beach port of Progreso, orientation also includes a tour of Mérida with historical information and social composition. The program fee includes three day-long field work experiences that are part of the academic program; destinations include an archaeological site in a historical town, fishing village, or nature preserve. Also included are cooking classes and exposure to the unique regional cuisine. The IFSA-Butler staff also organize outings to cultural events, museums and theaters.

The International Honors Program offers students a unique opportunity to examine major social justice and sustainability issues facing the world today. Students examine a thematic topic in multiple countries in the semester or academic year, exploring how people in different countries create varied solutions to the common problems they face. For over 50 years, IHP has challenged students to ask new and better questions about their lifelong roles in a global community. IHP programs offer a rigorous curriculum using different ways of learning. Experiential learning, through site visits and case studies, complements interdisciplinary team teaching led by in-country and traveling faculty. The International Human Rights Exchange (IHRE) is the world’s only full-semester, multidisciplinary program in human rights. Each semester, undergraduate students and faculty from Southern Africa, North America, and other regions of the world come together to participate in a deep and multi-faceted intellectual engagement with human rights. The IHRE program is housed at the University of the Witwatersrand (also known as Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa and is a joint venture with Bard College. IHRE inspires and activates students by advancing their knowledge and experience of human rights. Program activities include: Rigorous and thought-provoking classes taught in a seminar style, including a core course on the international human rights framework and a practicum on human rights advocacy; A multidisciplinary selection of elective courses, connecting human rights concerns to: development, gender, and culture; literature, media, and theatre; philosophy, politics and social work; *A hands-on, mentored internship with a leading NGO working on the frontlines of social change; Guest lectures offered by leading luminaries in the human rights field; * An exploration of human rights challenges off-campus through human rights workshops, visits to key sites such as Soweto and the Apartheid Museum, and other cultural activities; and Membership in a diverse and global community of students and scholars committed to human rights. IHRE believes that the subject of human rights provides an excellent framework for realizing the goal of liberal education. The program aims to provide a challenging and rewarding experience by: enabling critical and creative thinking about human rights: developing a democratic understanding of people’s role in society; linking academic work with activism, advocacy, and building a culture of human rights; implementing student-centered learning; and establishing relationships of equality, mutuality, and exchange among participants. We seek to promote a critical understanding of human rights as part of a broad intellectual and social movement, not simply as a code or set of laws. We believe that human rights is a discourse in transformation (and often in contest) that is best understood through a multidisciplinary approach extending to the humanities, social sciences, arts, and sciences.

We offer a range of specialised undergraduate workshops including poetry, short fiction, children’s writing, environmental writing and creative nonfiction. These can also be taken independently. We have built a strong workshop culture, reflecting our belief in the importance of nurturing individual voices within a lively community of writers.

The modern Whiteknights Campus of the University of Reading is the academic anchor of ISA's England program, and is set on 300 acres of landscaped parkland which was once a medieval manorial estate. The campus provides an ideal setting for a modern university. ISA participants live in the arranged dorm housing with British and international students. The University of Reading has a rich history dating back to the second half of the nineteenth Century, when local initiatives established schools of arts and sciences in the region. The campus includes a conservation area with many trees and farms for agricultural teaching and research. There is an enrollment of 7,700 full-time undergraduate students and over 5,200 postgraduates, with approximately 20% of the students coming from overseas. The university operates on a trimester schedule and offers a wide variety of courses available in over forty departments.

The Latin American Studies and Economics program is designed for advanced students who would like to take a variety of courses with Peruvian students. There are numerous courses to choose from and the university specializes in business and economics. The UP recently added one or two Humanities courses in English for international students. All classes are taken at the University of the Pacific with Peruvian and international students.

ISA students will be engaged both culturally and academically while studying at Veritas University or the ULACIT (Latin American University of Science and Technology). For convenience, the ISA office is located on the university side of town. Students rave about the ISA staff and the program's success in helping them to achieve their study abroad and foreign language goals. ISLE (Intercollegiate Sri Lanka Education) offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to study in Sri Lanka. Since 1982, the ISLE Program has introduced over 400 American undergraduate students to Sri Lanka's history, archaeology, environment, society, religion, literature, language, politics, economics and art. Many ISLE students have subsequently returned to Sri Lanka for further studies on Fulbright grants or within the context of graduate study programs in the humanities and social sciences.

Sweet Briar College has been committed to providing students an intensive immersion experience in Paris since 1948, and now a program in Nice. A limited number of internships in government or social agencies are available during the second semester. Students may also volunteer to serve as assistants to French teachers of English during the whole year or the second semester. Students are registered as regular students and do the same work as their French counterparts, unlike programs where students attend lectures as auditors and have their work corrected by tutors not connected with the University.

The Curriculum of the Asian Studies Program is twofold; the rigorous Japanese language studies and courses in the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Business/Economics pertinent to Japan and Asia make it possible for participants to approach a wide array of study areas during their stay in Japan. While Japanese language instruction plays a key role in our program, we are by no means a language-training institute. For this reason, the structure of the program may not necessarily accommodate the needs of those students whose primary interest lies solely on acquisition of the Japanese language. Since all courses in the Asian Studies Program, aside from those focusing on the Japanese language, are conducted in English, it is possible for students with no previous Japanese training to pursue an in-depth study of Japan and Asia.

Berlin truly offers students a uniquely rich and layered experience. Culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhoods mark a city functioning not only as the federal and national, national capital, but also as the new center of European Union decision-making and business, and as a springboard to eastern Europe. Precisely these multifarious roles and tensions continue to make Berlin the setting for critical inquiry and a flourishing arts scene. In 2002, inspired by documenta11, Lexia in Berlin offered a parallel summer program in visual studies. Summer 2003 marked the beginning of an ongoing second track in Visual Culture. It is designed to make the most of what Berlin has to offer in the way of art collections and artistic innovation, to consider the conditions for creating, collecting, and displaying works of art, and to examine the interplay of culture and politics. Fall 2006 marked the beginning of Lexia's Architecture Program.

An internationally known painting school in the south of France, the Marchutz School takes an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to art education. The Marchutz School leads students to unify spontaneous perceptual painting and drawing with extensive museum and site-study in Europe and intensive critical dialogue amongst students and artists at all levels. The mission of the Marchutz School is threefold: to enhance awareness of the relationship between perception and imagination, to develop historical and critical perspectives, and, above all, to develop the student's capacity to see. Students at Marchutz look around them as well as within themselves until their artistic expression springs from a union of sight and insight.

Seven surrounding hills, known as jabals, helped shaped the city. Amman is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world having been home to a multitude of civilizations over the years - the Ammonites, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Nabateans and Romans, Byzantines and Umayyad Arabs. Local faculty from the University of Jordan are hired to teach classes specifically designed for program participants in advanced language, culture, and civilization. All students take a combination of language and content courses; Modern Standard Arabic (6 hours per week), Jordanian Colloquial Arabic (4 hours per week), and two electives courses on Jordanian and Middle Eastern culture, religion, or politics. he C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in China, in cooperation with CET Academic Programs, offers immersion opportunities in the language and culture in three distinct locations: Beijing, Hangzhou, and Kunming. Intended for students with an intermediate to advanced level of Chinese language, the program structure, including housing with Chinese roommates, is designed to expose students to an environment that will build upon their foundation of Chinese while rapidly increasing their knowledge of the language and culture.

Intended for students with advanced French language skills, the Middlebury program in Cameroon enables students to increase their language abilities through housing and interaction with native speakers. Whether spending time with house mates, in classes, or in the city, students use their language in a very real immersion environment.

Designed for students at an advanced level of French, the C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in France provides opportunities to experience French culture in one of three locations: Bordeaux - a larger city with a rich culinary and wine growing tradition; Paris - the cosmopolitan capital at the heart of France; and Poitiers- a quintessential French town with a strong university and student culture.

The Brandeis University/Middlebury Program in Israel is the first and only full Hebrew language immersion program in Israel. In addition to Hebrew instruction and content-courses, students have various internship or volunteer opportunities from which to choose. The program location at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev provides an effective and authentic immersion experience.

During their first semester at the School in Russia, participants take five courses. For most students, this consists of: advanced Russian grammar, speech practice, phonetics, choice of one спецкурс in literature, history or politics and Russian culture & civilization. All courses are taught in Russian and are exclusive to School in Russia participants. Full-year students are required to take at least one regular university course during the spring semester and are strongly encouraged to substitute more than one regular university course for language classes, as full-time Middlebury students will do. Following successful completion of these courses in the first semester, full-year participants are given the option of taking more specialized language courses in the spring. For language courses, students are divided into language-level groups based on the results of a language placement test given prior to arrival in Russia, and on the results of interviews and testing which takes place on site, in Russia.

Intended for students with an advanced proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese, the direct enrollment structure of the School in Latin America provides students with the opportunity to increase their language abilities through constant interaction with native speakers. Whether spending time with local students in their classes, their colleagues at an internship placement, or in their homestays, students use their language in a very real immersion environment. OTS and Duke University sponsor the semester on Global Health, a program designed primarily for pre-med, biology, public health, and natural science majors to be trained in research in the areas of tropical medicine and public health in Costa Rica. Our 15-week undergraduate semester abroad program emphasizes the scientific, intercultural, and social aspects of global health, tropical medicine, public health, ethnobiology, and research topics in these subjects. Live and work at 6 different field stations, in 6 different ecosystems throughout Costa Rica. The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) ecology, complemented by a strong foundation in the social, political, economic, and scientific aspects of resource management and conservation. One Year/Semester Program (OYP) students benefit from a diversified academic experience while earning credits that may be transferred to their home college or university. A wide variety of courses, offered mainly in English, may provide credit in such areas as archaeology, business, history, literature, philosophy, religion, communications, international relations, political science, psychology, sociology and science.

Our program in Namibia offers a rich experience in community wildlife conservation. Students spend their time conducting various types of research in the Kunene Region and come away with diverse perspectives of how conservation is done here in local communities; perspectives that certainly cannot be taught in a classroom. Students will participate in many of the following activities: assist Round River with the KREA project by conducting community interviews, collecting GPS data for villages and water sources, and mapping livestock grazing patterns within a conservancy. This may also involve training community game guards on how to use GPS units; assist Save the Rhino Trust researchers in base-line ecological research efforts, including rhino census studies and habitat model field validation. Students typically spend two weeks per program “rhino-tracking,” often in very remote regions of the Kunene; and much much more.

Spend days hiking through Patagonian steppe and rare temperate grasslands watching herds of guanaco (a llama-like camelid) and exploring the beech forests and high peaks of the future Patagonia National Park. Learn from local residents and park guards how to track the local wildlife, survey critical habitat, and document the biodiversity of this ecologically rich and important region. Interact with local farmers and assist families in their efforts to learn about the area’s ecological and economic importance. Wander the landscape amongst snow-capped peaks and glacial rivers while experiencing the vibrant Chilean culture. Students will participate in many of the following activities: * Conduct ecological restoration activities * Monitor native species using motion-sensor cameras * Inventory flora and fauna species * Learn basic Spanish while participating in education events within local communities * Aid Conservación Patagónica to document the biodiversity and prioritize their conservation actions The Chacabuco Valley, the spectacular heart of the future Patagonia National Park, is located in a transitional zone between the semi-arid Patagonian steppe and temperate beech forests, thereby boasting amazing scenery and a span of habitats, from grasslands and wetlands to high alpine peaks. This habitat diversity supports the highest levels of biodiversity found in the Aysen region of Chile. While camped in Chacabuco students, in addition to their fieldwork and academics, participate in experiential learning with local researchers and residents on the region’s ecological, cultural, and agricultural history. Spanish language skills are not required, but a basic Spanish course is taught and Chilean students often participate in the program. With this exception all lectures and field activities are in English.

By coming to SEA, you can get a semester’s credit for a 12-week program that takes place half on shore and half at sea. Our interdisciplinary program begins in Woods Hole, one of the world’s great centers for ocean research. Here you will study the chemistry, biology, physics, and geology of the oceans and you will design your own research project that you will carry out at sea. You will learn the history and culture of mariners who for centuries have gone to sea, an ancient tradition that you will join. You will discuss the major policy issues that will be tomorrow’s headlines. And you will learn what it requires to take a vessel under sail safely to the deep ocean and to international ports.

The Siena School is a Cultural Institute which, in close collaboration with two non-profit organizations, is committed to running semester and summer study abroad programs where our students become a vital part of our ongoing cultural and social work. Each student is presented with social, political, and economic problems as it deals with internal, regional, and global shifts. Based in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, students travel on educational excursions to three of the four MERCOSUR member nations. Lectures encompass each country's political and economic history while looking at salient social issues sets the stage for a deeper understanding on educational excursions. Field visits cover relevant issues such as alternative development, participatory democracy, grassroots movements and cultural identity. Students also gain insight into the different countries' view of MERCOSUR, its benefits and its problems.

Argentina is a country renowned for heroic efforts against impunity, economic disenfranchisement, and social exclusion. Students travel throughout the nation, visiting social activists, local scholars, indigenous leaders, environmental advocates, rural organizers, and others who share their struggles, hopes, and dreams for their community, nation, and world.

The SIT Australia: Sustainability and Environmental Action study abroad program is designed to empower students to make a positive contribution towards making our societies more sustainable. Students are not only given the knowledge needed to make informed judgments about environmental issues; they are inspired to believe that they can make a difference and are motivated to take action to address environmental problems. The program is based on the philosophy that environmental issues such as global climate change are so important in today’s world that all students, no matter what their major, should be 'ecologically literate.' Therefore the program welcomes students from all majors and values the diversity of academic perspectives that this brings.

Explore how identities, cultural processes, and resources determine who controls and benefits from development in Bolivia. The program includes field excursions to Bolivia’s tropical lowlands and the altiplano, including spectacular Lake Titicaca and the world's highest capital city, La Paz. Homestays and intensive Spanish language instruction allow students to become deeply immersed in urban and rural Bolivian communities. Through the program’s thematic seminar, students consider the country’s contemporary economic development challenges, particularly among Bolivia’s large indigenous populations. Major topics of study include: Bolivia’s historical foundations, Andean and Amazonian culture and cosmovision and Development models and practices.

Explore the key issues in natural resource management and human ecology currently affecting the Brazilian Amazon. Students consider the conflict between finite ecological resources and seemingly infinite human development demands on the Amazon River Basin. Belém, the program base at the mouth of the Amazon, is a principal center for Amazonian research. Participants gain firsthand insights into resource management and human ecology through excursions to rainforest villages, research laboratories, extractive industry sites, and archaeological sites. Excursions to southern Pará, an area of extensive logging and land degradation, provide opportunities to focus on current land use strategies and struggles, including a chance to interact with members of the Landless People’s Movement.

This program explores emerging health care issues in Brazil, particularly those related to the country's African Diaspora population, which comprises approximately 50 percent of Brazil's population. Particular attention is spent studying traditional Afro Brazilian healing practices, especially those rooted in the Candomblé spiritual belief system, on which many rural and urban communities still rely.

Examine the multifaceted dynamics shaping development patterns in northeastern Brazil. These include social, political, and economic forces. Through thematic coursework, educational excursions, field study, and independent research students gain exceptional insight into the socioeconomic challenges facing the region's diverse populations. Cultural immersion in both urban and rural settings provides students with additional perspectives on the impact national and international socioeconomic and political policies are having on northeast Brazil.

Examine social, economic, and political development patterns in one of West Africa's most ethnically and geographically diverse countries. Cameroon is home to more than 200 ethnic groups and even more languages and dialects, and finding common ground for its national agendas poses an ongoing challenge. Famous for its folklore, art, and diverse environments, Cameroon is striving to preserve its cultural heritage and diversity in the face of globalization and pressing socioeconomic needs. Students have access to cultural activities, academic resources, and many of the international development organizations headquartered in the city. A two-week stay in the northern town of Ngaoundéré and excursions to western and coastal Cameroon give insight into how social change is manifested in different regions.

Examine the powerful relationship between education and social change. Consider the ways in which educational politics, strategy, and pedagogy influence society in Chile and Argentina. Students engage in rigorous academic coursework and research on the educational systems in urban and rural areas in Chile and Argentina, and observe first-hand the application of popular education as a tool for social change. The program offers students the opportunity to interact with prominent academics, policy makers, activists, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to gain a panoramic understanding of the forces affecting Chile and Argentina's educational policies.

Examine the political history of Chile in a contemporary cultural context. Gain insights into the forces at play as Chile works to reconcile with its past while moving forward politically, socially, and economically. Chile’s return to civilian rule after 18 years of military dictatorship has generated international interest. Recent efforts to prosecute former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet have spurred worldwide debate on human rights and social justice, while economic policies and the actions of increasingly vocal indigenous groups fuel further debat

Gain unique insight and exposure to health care policies, politics, and delivery methods in a multicultural and rapidly changing region of South America. Central to the program is an analysis of health reform intended primarily to improve health conditions of disadvantaged groups, particularly those in Chile, while also improving health care access for the population at large. Students carefully examine intercultural health and alternative healthcare practices in the context of Chile as well as southern Peru. Students consider different conceptions of wellness and healing, including beliefs and health practices of the Aymara and Mapuche indigenous groups. The program gives students the opportunity to experience Chile's health system firsthand with guided, insightful visits to public and private health centers.

Explore the political, social, and geographic dynamics shaping Chile's economic development. Students examine industries such as forestry, mining, agriculture, and tourism to develop a panoramic understanding of how the global market and local and foreign policies impact Chile’s export-driven economy. Students interact with policy analysts, government officials, union activists, and community leaders to learn about the broad influence of globalization on Chile's multinational companies as well as small-scale cooperatives and micro-enterprises. Intensive Spanish language study and homestays with host families in Santiago and Valle de Elicura connect students with Chilean culture and facilitate cross-cultural communication and field study.

Examine China's extraordinary cultural complexity in Yunnan Province, one of the world's most anthropologically and ecologically diverse locations. Through direct engagement with multiple sources of knowledge, students explore traditional cultures and beliefs, the impact of tourism on minority cultures, and the growing gap between urban and rural life in China. Intensive Chinese language instruction and homestays with host families in both urban and rural settings allow students to examine critical issues surrounding China's rich diversity from unique perspectives and in varied environments. Carefully-designed field excursions expose students to the environmental, cultural, and economic realities that characterize the region's different ethnic minorities. Visits to Dali, Lijiang, and Zhongdian bring students into direct engagement with local scholars, medical and development professionals, and Daoist, Buddhist, Islamic, and Christian religious leaders.

Based in Havana, the program provides an immersive cultural examination of Cuba's rich artistic tradition, ethnic heritages and identity, and historical developments. Coursework will be delivered primarily by faculty members of the Union Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba. The program base is historic Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Educational excursions take students to the high sierras of the Andes, the epiphyte-rich cloud forest, the rugged snow-line páramo, and the vast rainforest of the Ecuadorian Amazon. A guided, weeklong visit to the extraordinary Galápagos Islands provides access to plant and animal species found nowhere else on earth.

Today, development in this highly indigenous nation faces new challenges, including the recent dollarization. As Ecuador copes with political and economic transition, increasing participation on the part of indigenous organizations offers hope for a more inclusive and representative democracy. Quito, Ecuador's picturesque 9,000-foot-high capital, is a bustling city with international, colonial, and indigenous influences. Homestays in the semirural outskirts of Quito, as well as educational excursions to communities in the high sierras of the Andes, Amazon basin, and Pacific Coast, further students' understanding of the impact of Ecuador's cultural, political, and economic transformation on its national and cultural identity.

Students experience full language immersion through instruction at L’Institute Catholique de Toulouse, interdisciplinary seminars, and homestays in French communities. Students interact with French scholars, community members, local organizers, and arts groups. The program’s Community Service Project provides students an opportunity to increase language skills while giving back to the host community. The program is based in Toulouse, France’s second-largest urban university area. Toulouse is home to a world-class arts and cultural scene and is situated between the Pyrenees Mountains and Mediterranean Sea. Students also undertake several excursions outside Toulouse, including to the Pyrenees Orientales along the French-Spanish border.

Examine Ghanaian social, political, and economic structures through the lens of Ghana's artistic and literary expressions. A country of approximately 20 million people, Ghana boasts an outstanding artistic heritage that manifests itself in all aspects of cultural performance and craftworks. Students explore this rich heritage through deep and meaningful engagement with Ghanaian scholars, artists, dancers, musicians, painters, sculptors, weavers, writers, and other in-country experts. Interdisciplinary coursework, held in the classroom and in the field, reveals to students the historical and contemporary circumstances that have shaped Ghanaian society and the artistic outputs of this complex and highly diverse West African country.

Explore the living legacy of an ancient civilization through its traditional and contemporary arts community. This program studies the visual and performing arts of India—its architecture, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, film, dance, music, and drama—in historic and contemporary contexts. Students are challenged to consider the relationship between religion, art, and identity. Taking advantage of Delhi’s rich artistic heritage and lively contemporary arts scene, the program includes time at: historical and cultural sites, museums and art galleries, concerts and recitals, film festivals, and dance and drama performances.

Examine socioeconomic development trends in northern India in the context of North Indian culture and identity. The program focuses on the state of Rajasthan, historically a princely and aristocratic state, and a center of Hindu, Jain, and Muslim traditions. Through thematic coursework, field study, and complementary educational excursions, students consider the diverse factors - internal and global - shaping India's development strategies and patterns and evaluate the sustainability of recent development efforts in North India. A central focus of the program is on capacity building, resource use, and social and economic change.

Explore the relationship between religion, fine arts, performing arts, and social organization in contemporary Bali. Through thematic seminars, field study, independent research, and deep cultural immersion, students scrutinize the current and emerging debates on the future of Balinese culture and society in relation to mounting global pressures such as increased development and international tourism. Students are exposed to a variety of perspectives, including Indonesian and international academics, local writers, artists, and community leaders, through SIT’s extensive in-country networks. Specific emphasis in this program is placed on traditional and shifting Balinese art forms. Students examine topics including how religious and spiritual rituals of Balinese Hinduism lend themselves easily to artistic representation, and the manner in which new Balinese styles are emerging both from within the community and from external sources. Throughout the semester, students have unique opportunities to learn Balinese dance, the music of the Balinese gamelan ensembles, mask making, and other local artistic practices alongside well respected masters of their field.

Through thematic seminars, field study, and primary research, students examine current theories of conflict and conflict transformation with a particular focus on the following topics: sectarian and ethnic conflict, structural violence and the state, historical roots of conflict, social and political inequality and creation of sustainable peace. Students consider the ways in which conflict can become embedded in the social, political, and economic realities of societies and cultures.

Explore the intersections of economics, health, and social development in Kenya. Kenya is home to more than 40 ethnic groups, each retaining a strong sense of cultural identity. Students will learn about Kenya’s advances in educational training, infrastructure, and technical development, and gain an understanding of the vibrant private sector and successful coalition-building efforts that have helped to strengthen Kenya’s economy. Homestays and educational excursions help illustrate that access to health care remains an issue for this predominantly rural population. Students interact with a wide array of local contacts in cosmopolitan, multiethnic Nairobi, the regional base for numerous local and international nongovernmental organizations engaged in development and health-related projects.

Through this program, students focus on their Swahili skills while discovering how language and shared cultural practices serve as connecting threads linking the region's diverse populations. The program places particular emphasis on the Kenya coastal region, Swahili language and culture, and Islam, and includes excursions to communities of Tanzania’s coast, including the islands of Zanzibar.

Study ecology in an island nation that has been isolated from other landmasses for more than one hundred million years. Madagascar’s unique evolutionary path has produced an immeasurable contribution to the world’s biodiversity—more than 80 percent of the flora and fauna are endemic. Classroom and field-based instruction in natural and social scientific methods encourage students to analyze environmental issues in an array of ecosystems, including rainforests, dry spiny forests, alpine and transitional forests, savanna, gallery and littoral forests, mangroves, and coral reefs. Studies in French and Malagasy, combined with a homestay, a village stay, and numerous excursions to national parks, offer students a balanced social- and natural-science view and perspective on long-term conservation and the development needs of local populations.

Explore identity formation and socioeconomic and political transition in the context of Madagascar's remarkable ethnic and geographic diversity. Through immersion in the country's dynamic capital city, Antananarivo, and the west coast town of Mahajanga, as well as on excursions in the country's eastern and northwestern regions, students develop an in-depth understanding of the domestic and external influences that continue to shape this island nation today. Students spend the semester uncovering the many layers of Madagascar's rich cultural heritage to discover why Madagascar prides itself on unity amidst diversity. The program's core academic components include a thematic seminar, a field study seminar, language instruction in both French and Malagasy, and an Independent Study Project (ISP). Field-based activities throughout the semester as well as urban and rural homestays complement the academic program. These components are designed to reveal the complexity of contemporary Malagasy culture and society while opening doors that allow students to participate in the daily life of host communities.

Mongolia offers a fascinating study of the interplay between foreign engagement, economic development, and natural resource utilization. This program examines Mongolia's socio-economic and political reform; diplomatic engagement with major global economies; and regional relations. Students experience how resource management issues - including mining, conservation of pasturelands, and grazing rights - are shaping public and private life and traditional identity. During the rural excursion, students live alongside nomadic herding communities and experience some of the most pristine natural environments in the world.

Examine Islam as a system of thought, Morocco’s political system and monarchy, and the country’s place in the Middle East and in African, Berber, and Arab cultures. Additional studies focus on women’s place within Moroccan society and contemporary development challenges. This nation’s history and culture reflect the influence of a long succession of invaders and settlers as well as the indigenous Berbers, who make up half of Morocco’s population. Based in the cosmopolitan city of Rabat, students study Arabic and acquire an in-depth appreciation of a rich and rapidly changing society in Morocco. Excursions include the four imperial cities of Fès, Meknès, Rabat, and Marrakech. Students also travel to Zagora and Essaouira to explore the roles Morocco has played in Africa and southwestern Europe, both as a medieval and post-renaissance empire and as a contemporary society.

Witness the challenges facing Nepal as it works to balance tradition and progress and negotiate economic, political, and social change. Renowned for its scenery, from the peaks of the Himalayas to the remnants of tropical jungles in the tarai, Nepal is a land of complex ethnic and cultural diversity. Many Nepalese communities—shaped by their physical environments and pressured by scarce resources—have found innovative solutions that have helped them move forward in a challenging environment. Today, international development, internal political conflict, an emerging civil society, and the global market are all working to redefine Nepal in the twenty-first century. Based in the Kathmandu Valley, students also take field excursions to the tarai, the Indian hills station of Darjeeling, and a village in the Himalayas, as they examine topics ranging from preservation of historic cities to tourist impact on local culture and national parks.

Examine the diversity of Himalayan societies across the South Asian sub-continent, with special emphasis on the Tibetan experience and identity. Through thematic lectures and field work, students explore issues of cultural preservation, religious revival, and sub-regional geopolitics and are challenged to consider the contemporary and historic linkages connecting different Himalayan communities. Questions of self-identification and recognition, as well as issues of diaspora, exile, and migration, are important topics for analysis in this program. From the program base in Nepal, students gain access to a rich array of academic resources throughout the Kathmandu Valley and beyond, learning from prominent Tibetan and Newar Buddhist scholars, as well as regional, ethnic (Sherpa and Tamang), and community experts.

Based in Amsterdam, students explore the intersections of Dutch and international perspectives. Students select one Sexuality and Gender Seminar program module from choices including Critical Theory, Tolerance and Sexual Health Education, or Filmmaking with a Sexuality and Gender Lens (offered fall semester only). Each student also chooses a Field Study practicum with a Dutch or international organization.

Examine the different ways in which Nicaraguan movements are shaped by domestic and external influences, including US foreign policy. Students consider the repercussions of recent Central American revolutionary movements, including those focused on women, indigenous people, campesinos/as, and the environment, and also discuss Nicaragua’s future.

The program gives students a rare opportunity to study tropical ecology up close in one of the world’s most diverse wildlife and plant environments. Students interact with research and conservation experts, local organizations, and indigenous groups to gain an in-depth understanding of how issues related to development and conservation affect lives and livelihoods within local communities. Intensive language instruction and homestays with host families in both urban and rural settings give students a rare, personal experience of the country, its cultures and livelihoods.

Examine traditional and contemporary societies in Peru, home to one of the largest indigenous populations in the Americas. This program explores the ways in which Peru has been shaped by complex historical legacies, a multiethnic population, and profound social and economic disparities between its different ethnic groups. Topics for study include: rights, advocacy, and policy; community development; the arts, including pre-Columbian artistic expression; identity-recognition; and impact of international corporations.

Examine traditional society and social transition in the context of Oceania. Through interdisciplinary coursework, field study, and independent research, students explore processes of change in Samoa and other Pacific communities. Students consider the impact of new and different values on Pacific Island communities and social structures in light of development and globalization pressures. Topics for study in the context of the Pacific include: impacts and incorporation of Christianity; the shift from a subsistence to cash economy; introduction of human rights into a communal society; migration patterns and the role of remittances; social changes resulting from globalization, migration, and development in Samoa, American Samoa, and Fiji; and the current "coup culture" in Fiji.

Experience the enormous contribution to African arts and culture made by Senegal, a nation that has inspired three centuries of poets, novelists, and artists. Led to independence by internationally acclaimed poet and philosopher Leopold Senghor, this West African nation has long emphasized the role of art and culture in society. With the capital city of Dakar as home base, students examine topics such as the role of Islam in Senegalese life, contemporary development and poverty, and the history of the slave trade. Arts workshops focusing on areas such as batik making, ceramics, and sand painting, or musical training ranging from Senegalese dance to traditional instruments, add a hands-on component. Homestays, a rural visit, and educational excursions to Sine-Saloum Delta, Gorée Island, Saint-Louis, and Petite Côte complement field and classroom instruction.

Through thematic lectures and seminars, complemented by site visits and program excursions, students experience various aspects of the far-reaching changes, particularly peacebuilding, taking place in Balkan societies. Students gain a theoretical framework and increased knowledge to better examine post-conflict transformation in the context of this region.

Students will focus on topics such as the relationship between traditional healing and western medicine, prenatal care, access to health care, and health education. Building on a multidisciplinary and historical analysis of health in South Africa, the program explores critical issues and initiatives in a nation where health policies have achieved mixed results in addressing health problems.

South Africa is truly a multicultural society, with 11 national languages and numerous ethnic groups. While South Africans have seen tremendous change since the first multiracial elections in 1994, they anticipate a long road before achieving the stated goal of equality. Cape Town, the program base, was one of the first South African cities to voluntarily promote racial integration. In a typical semester, students complete four homestays —each providing the opportunity to meet and interact with South Africans from different geographic and ethnic backgrounds. The strong emphasis on the homestay as experiential learning complements lectures, discussions, field-based assignments, and excursions to provide a multidisciplinary analysis of the country.

Explore the dynamic socioeconomic, political, and cultural processes of South Africa, an extraordinarily diverse country in transition. Similar to other countries around the world, South Africa is striving to free itself of a legacy of racial discrimination, economic exploitation, and political authoritarianism to build a new democratic and equitable regime. Through coursework and community engagement, students discover the significant role that Durban, the program's base, has played in South African history, particularly its role in apartheid. To provide students with learning opportunities in many different contexts, the program also includes field visits to Johannesburg, Cape Town, rural parts of both KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, the Umfolozi and Hluhluwe Game Reserves, and the Drakensberg Mountain range.

The program combines intensive language study with coursework on Spain’s society and community service. Students are completely immersed in a Spanish-speaking environment. Students of all levels have the opportunity to rapidly improve their Spanish while examining the political, social, and cultural forces shaping contemporary Spain. The program’s seminar explores Spain’s turbulent history, growing domestic diversity, and deeper integration within the European Union. Students also conduct a community project appropriate to their language proficiency level. The project enables students to expand language immersion and community involvement while forming partnerships with their host community. Students live for twelve weeks with a host family in Granada and spend three days at a rural house in the "Alpujarras" within the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The program also includes a five-day academic excursion in northern Morocco.

Grounded in a framework of social justice, this program focuses on vulnerable groups, and critiques organizations that respond to their needs. Classroom seminars are supplemented by lectures and briefings at international and nongovernmental organizations, including the University Hospital of Geneva, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and the World Health Organization. Interactive research studies and field excursions in Switzerland and Morocco deepen students' understanding of the challenges faced by organizations that foster public health, human rights, peacebuilding, multilateral diplomacy, environmental accountability, and sustainable development.

Examine coastal ecology and natural resource management in one of the most remarkable areas of the world: Zanzibar and the islands of the Western Indian Ocean. The region's geographic location and distinct ecological conditions allow students to study specific environmental topics, including tropical forest management and coral reef conservation, in a unique context. Through thematic coursework and direct field experience students are exposed to multiple sources of knowledge in order to better understand the dual imperatives of economic growth and environmental protection. The program is based in Zanzibar's historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Unguja Island. In Stone Town, students attend lectures at the well-regarded Institute of Marine Science, where they work on a range of observation assignments.

Develop insight into the delicate balance between socioeconomic goals and ecological concerns in the vast wilderness expanses of Tanzania. Home to Serengeti National Park—the site of the largest wildlife migration on earth—Tanzania features tropical, temperate, and alpine forests. Ngorongoro Crater, a 12-mile-wide extinct volcano, is one of the wonders of the natural world. Within these disparate ecosystems, issues of population growth, land use, and tourism development are in tense juxtaposition with wildlife conservation efforts. From the program base in the heart of Tanzania's most renowned wilderness parks, students explore the country’s diverse human and natural environments through seminars and field visits to nature reserves and conservation areas. Swahili language study and a rural stay with a Maasai community complement classroom work and field research.

Examine contemporary social movements and identity formation in Tunisia and North Africa. As emerging economies, Tunisia and its neighbors are in a transitional phase, and while they share much in common—particularly with respect to large populations of youth—each country is addressing current political, economic, and cultural challenges in distinct ways. Students consider how factors such as western-style capitalism, Maghreb relations in North Africa, local and national politics, and engagement with Europe are intersecting to shape identity in states across the region. Outstanding learning opportunities in Tunis and beyond. SIT students are able to take full advantage of the unique learning opportunities offered in the capital of Tunis. They attend lectures by academics from Tunis University and interact with local artists, experts from civil society, and activists from local NGOs and community organizations.

Work closely with faculty and students from Makerere University to study complex issues of social and economic development in Uganda, a once-turbulent nation with a fast-growing economy. A custom two-week module with a choice of focus on public health, grassroots development, or gender and development provides opportunities to work with organizations such as the Kasangati Health Center, the Uganda Change Agent Association, and the women and gender studies department at Makerere University. Based in Kampala, Uganda's thriving capital, the program also offers an in-depth, hands-on practicum with one of the country's many international or grassroots development agencies to provide a deeper understanding of the practice of development work. Field visits to rural areas explore what lies beyond the rhetoric of the "development industry" as students learn about the diverse strengths and needs of this changing nation.

This program examines the origins of the conflict in northern Uganda; issues of identity construction in the Ugandan context; and ongoing efforts by Ugandans to advance peace, community building, and reconciliation. A major focus of the program is on the challenges associated with displacement: estimates suggest that the number of internally displaced Ugandans reached 1.7 million people, amounting to roughly 80 percent of the regional population. Students learn from Ugandan academics, community leaders, and international professionals working in the areas of post-conflict transformation, peacebuilding, sustainable reconciliation, and community development

Examine economic and social development in the cultural context of Viet Nam, one of Southeast Asia's most fascinating and rapidly changing countries. After emerging from decades of war and isolation, Viet Nam today is experiencing tremendous growth and, over the last decade, has boasted one of the strongest economies in Asia. The Swedish Program is sponsored by Stockholm University and by a consortium of American colleges and universities. The campus is located just ten minutes to the heart of the city by subway. It is quite easy for students to benefit from the rich cultural life the city has to offer as well as other forms of entertainment. Stockholm University is a major teaching/research university and home to 34,000 undergraduate and graduate students. However, the campus has a much smaller “feel” to it. The university is situated in the middle of the first national, city park in the world. Pine forests and the Baltic Sea surround the campus. The buildings are both modern and historic with distinctive contemporary art and sculpture scattered around campus.

In The Ailey School/PPAS Program, 70-80 Dance Majors attend academic classes every morning at the Professional Performing Arts high school from 7:45am to 1:20pm. In the afternoon, a school bus takes them to The Ailey School where they attend two dance classes from 1:45pm to 4:30pm. Students are placed in one of four technique levels at a placement audition at the beginning of the school year. Each level takes in a broad curriculum of 7 to 10 classes each week that includes ballet, modern dance, West African, Jazz and other techniques. The curriculum is designed to promote consummate technical progress appropriate for each student's age and stage of physical development. The weekly schedule is supplemented by regular workshops and lectures on dance history, nutrition, anatomy, injury prevention, body conditioning, music for dancers, West African dance, improvisation, career transition, college preparation, and audition practice. Workshops are taught by the distinguished faculty and staff of The Ailey School.

This program offers students 12 class hours per week of Chinese language during the fall and spring semesters and 15 hours per week during the summer as well as the opportunity to examine modern China through courses in English in several disciplines including economics, film studies, women’s studies, and cultural studies. Students may enroll for a semester, summer, or academic year, or a combination of a semester and summer term. Students are encouraged to consider spending their second term in China in a different Alliance program to deepen their knowledge of China’s regional diversity. The program is designed for students from a wide variety of majors and academic interests, with a curriculum that spans development studies, economics, public health, environmental studies, international affairs, political science, film and media studies, anthropology, history, and women's studies. By providing a core academic base and allowing progressive specialization though electives, culminating in an internship or directed research project of the student's own choosing, the Alliance's Contemporary India program takes an interdisciplinary yet focused approach to these timely and provocative issues, both as they apply to India and in their global context.

Located in the heart of the coastal belt of Karnataka, just north of Kerala, this exciting new program focuses primarily on health sciences, with direct-enroll course options addressing rural public health, global health, national health policy, and Ayurveda. These courses include field-based practicum components alongside other Manipal students, with regular visits to the university’s rural health clinics and main hospital. In addition to courses on public health, students also take courses on Indian Studies, including a specially-designed Contemporary Indian Society course exclusively for Alliance students, and other electives within the university’s Study Abroad Programme (SAP). Students primarily interested in Indian Studies can also opt out of the public health courses and participate fully in Manipal’s general SAP.

Founded in 1989, the Universidad de San Andrés is a small, private university that quickly earned national and international recognition for its academic excellence. The director of the Foreign Studies Office and staff conduct an academic and cultural orientation at the beginning of each semester. The two-day orientation program is designed to aid students with their adjustment to Argentina, facilitates, cultural understanding on an academic and social level, and provides practical information. Throughout the semester, the Foreign Studies Office organizes excursions to sites in and around the capital.

This Program provides a challenging opportunity for the serious art student who wishes to combine international travel with an intensive studio and classroom experience. The medieval hilltown of Cortona offers a rich historical environment where students can easily integrate with the lifestyle of a typical Italian community. Students can choose from a variety of classes each semester. During the spring or fall, students should select 4 courses. All students are required to take Art History 3020. They can select 3 additional classes from those offered. During the summer, students can take 3 classes. They are highly encouraged to take Art History 3020 as it is such an important part of the program. Non-studio majors who have not completed Drawing I, Color Theory, 2-D and 3-D Design can choose from Ceramics, Jewelry, and Paper Making/Book Arts. During the spring semester, several Creative Writing courses are offered. During May and June, three Maymester programs are scheduled to be offered - Science, Viticulture/Enology, and Drama.

This program is offered in collaboration with the prestigious José Ortega y Gasset Foundation and the University of Minnesota. Based in a converted 16th Century convent, the program offers modern learning facilities surrounded by spectacular views of the city, and easy access to the downtown area and public transit. In addition to the opportunity to improve Spanish language ability, the program offers a wide range of courses in the humanities, social sciences, and arts. Located just an hour from Madrid, Toledo is an excellent base from which to explore Spain.

IFSA-Butler and St. Andrews are proud to offer a terrific pre-med opportunity for fall semester students. This option is geared toward participants who plan to attend medical school after graduation. The fall pre-med option includes an Organic Chemistry course that is designed exclusively for IFSA-Butler pre-med students and taught by St. Andrews faculty. Students can round out their fall semester with other related courses from St. Andrews’ science schools, which offer study in areas such as biology, biochemistry, physiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, etc. or they can choose courses from non-science schools at St. Andrews.

The focus of our program is authentic access to French culture. Language is the key, of course. Wellesley-in-Aix energetically supports your efforts to achieve fluency in French, because it’s language that really allows you to enter deeply into the culture. Our curriculum is based on an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary hands-on course of study focused on the world's oceans and coastlines. Together, students of all majors study the history, literature, policy and science of the sea. And of course, your classroom is the nation around us, enriched by three field seminars. An ocean voyage off of Cape Cod or Florida exploring this vast world of water begins our semester's studies. Beaches, tugboats and container ships are part of a cross-disciplinary study on America's Pacific Coast. In the Gulf of Mexico, bayous, marshes and oil rigs in Louisiana lay the foundation for our studies of this dynamic coast.
