The Schengen zone includes these 24 countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Malta. US Citizens do not need a visa to enter these countries and may travel freely within them for a maximum of 90 days within a six month period. Carleton seminars are typically 70 days long, which allows for 20 days of independent travel before and/or after the program without exceeding eligibility.
If you wish to stay in Europe longer than 90 days, you may travel to a non-Schengen country (United Kingdom, Switzerland, Poland, Cyprus, Great Britain, Ireland, Bulgaria, Romania and Switzerland) and then re-enter the Schengen zone. Be sure that your passport is stamped when you leave and return to the Schengen zone so that if you fly out of a Schengen country it is clear that you did not exceed your legal stay in the Schengen zone.
Students on non-Carleton programs should work through their program provider to apply for a visa and/or residency permit in-country if the program is longer than 90 days.
See the following websites for more information on the Schengen visa, including how to apply for a Schengen Visa if you are not a US-citizen.
