Communicating With Home
You will be able to communicate with friends and family at home from almost anywhere in the world via email or telephone. Web-based email programs are available at internet cafes which are widely accessible in most cities for a small fee. In some cases the program will provide you with a cell phone, or you can rent or purchase one while in the country. Most of the time, incoming calls will be free, and you will pay a per-minute charge to make outgoing calls.
Pay phones do not take coins, but generally take a pre-paid debit card which can be easily purchased in-country. We recommend bringing a worldwide access phone card with you (such as an AT&T, MCI, or Sprint card) to make long distance calls from phones in hotels or host families’ homes. The ISID Card can also be used as a phone card. Please consult your program director or OCS staff for internet and phone options in specific countries.
