Winter Break 2008: Dream and Reality in Turn of the Century Vienna
Wien: Traum und Wirklichkeit
(Vienna 1900: Dream & Reality, Winter Break 2008 with Professor Anne Ulmer)
Vienna is FULL of wonderful museums and architecture. In early December you will also find countless Christmas markets and probably some snow.
We will see more Klimt and Schiele paintings than one can imagine, and other works from the early 20th-century. We will also see some of the early modernist architectural works by Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner, among others. Of course there are other earlier works (the Ringstrasse buildings, the Opera, various castles); and there are wonderful later works, such as various buildings by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. We will explore a variety of Viennese coffee houses (lately, there is even a Starbucks, where no smoking is allowed).
I will arrange a guided tour of the Freud house, where Sigmund Freud saw patients. We surely should be able to get tickets to some interesting music (though I can’t guarantee it will be from the turn of the century). I hope we can see at least one play.
Bring warm clothes, an umbrella, and good shoes – standing room at the opera is very affordable, and surprisingly pleasant, if you have the right shoes!
