Who to Contact with Questions

For all questions regarding teaching or adding classes:

For general PE and schedule questions:

    For reserving space:

A PE Curriculum Committee is in place to assist the Chair with decisions and to give feedback.

    General PE Class Policies

Be aware that the class schedule on the opening day of classes in the fall is VERY different because of Opening Convocation in the afternoon.
      • Classes conclude at the end of 9th week and must offer 18 total classes (most classes are offered twice a week for 9 weeks; some classes are offered 3 days a week for 6 weeks).
      • Taking attendance is required for credit/no credit classes.
      • Students are only allowed to miss 2 classes out of the 18 to receive credit. Priority for scheduling of class space and time follows seniority within the department.
      • If there are fewer than 5 people in a class then the class can be canceled at the instructor’s discretion.
      • Grading is done by the faculty member at the end of every term. Grades are submitted online on the HUB. Student instructors, see "Student Instructors" section below.
      • Head coaches give their varsity athletes credit/no credit grades (on the HUB) at the end of the term when their season is complete. Varsity athletes can receive 1 PE credit for each year.
      • Class rosters for faculty-taught classes can be found on the HUB and on Moodle.
      • Current course offerings can be found online at: http://apps.carleton.edu/campus/registrar/schedule or on the PEAR website at: http://apps.carleton.edu/curricular/pe/courses.
      • Students are only allowed to get credit for 1 PE class per term, unless they petition the Chair and receive approval.
      • Students are allowed to receive PE credit for the same class only twice while at Carleton.
      • Instructors may list their class as “freshman only” or “women only” in certain situations.
      • If students are unable to participate in or finish class because of an injury, they are allowed to petition to get credit for the class through “independent activity”. See the Chair of the PEAR Department for further requirements.

      Students Instructors

      • PEAR faculty cannot cover the entire demand for all PE classes, students are asked to teach certain classes.
      • A student instructor can receive a maximum of 4 work hours for being the “lead” instructor in a class.
      • If a second student, the teaching assistant (TA), assists that student instructor, then they can only receive hourly pay. This is also the policy for students who assist PE faculty members with their classes. The Chair has the discretion to add more instructors depending on the class size and needs. The Chair will be listed as the supervisor on the student instructor’s time sheet.
      • It is strongly recommended that students hold a TA position before becoming a lead instructor.
      • Students who are a TA or a lead instructor can opt to receive 1 PE credit for teaching OR the hourly pay for their work, but not both.
      • Class rosters for student-taught classes can be found on Moodle.
      • Student instructors will receive a grade roster from Linda Luedke by Week 1, and for grading purposes by Week 8 of classes. Student instructors are required to return the final grade roster to Linda by the end of Week 10.
      • Club sport captains will receive their team roster from Aaron Chaput by Week 1, and for grading purposes by Week 8 of classes. Captains are required to return the roster to Aaron, with grades, by the end of Week 10.

        Mentoring

        • Members of the PE department may be selected to mentor the student instructors.
        • Responsibilities include meeting with the student(s) every 3 weeks or so to assist them with any issues or questions they may have.
        • Mentors should require that all student instructors turn in an outline of lesson plans for approval prior to their first class, along with a class syllabus.

        Independent Study Protocol

Student and professor will write up a proposal for the Independent Study. Please include:

          • number of credits applying for (maximum of 3)
          • an outline of the topic for the independent study
          • what are the requirements to earn credit for the IS
          • how it applies to Physical Education, Athletics or Recreation
          • how progress will be evaluated and final grade be given
          • signed by both the student and instructor the student is collaborating with

The proposal should be submitted to the P. E. Curriculum Committee by the end of the term prior to wanting to conduct the Independent Study. The committee will give approval within the first week of the term.

Independent Study classes do not count as credit towards the required 4 PE classes.

          New Courses Proposals

          • In order to propose a new class, you must fill out an online form on the PEAR department website at this link: https://apps.carleton.edu/curricular/pe/pear_forms/proposal/
          • The proposal will be forwarded to the P.E. Curriculum Committee for discussion with the Chair.
          • The Chair will notify the applicant of the committee’s decision.

          Overloading of PE classes

Students are only allowed to receive 1 PE credit per term.

          Club Sport Credit and Grading

          • Approved club sports are eligible to receive 1 PE credit each year. PE Credit for a club team can only be given in one term per academic year.
          • Club sport participants are eligible to receive up to 4 PE credits for participation with their respective club.
          • Club sport captains will receive their team roster from Aaron Chaput by Week 1, and for grading purposes by Week 8 of classes.
          • Captains are required to return this roster to Aaron, with grades, by the end of Week 10.
