Putting Social Epistemology to Work in Environmental Science

Abstract: Some critics worry that social epistemology undermines the possibility for objectivity in science. I summarize the social epistemology approach I call 'critical empiricism' and show how applying it to a case of research on environmental toxins would enhance rather than undermine the objectivity of that research.
Professor Helen Longino is the Clarence Irving Lewis Professor of Philosophy at Stanford University. Her research interests include Feminist Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Social Services. She is the author of Studying Human Behavior: How Scientists Investigate Aggression & Sexuality (2013), The Fate of Knowledge (2001) and Science As Social Knowledge (1990).
