Old Major Requirements
Note:
The philosophy department has new requirements for majors that will graduate in 2013 and beyond. What follows are the major requirements for all current majors (the class of 2011 and 2012).
Prerequisites for Courses in Philosophy:
- For courses numbered 100-210: none.
- For courses numbered 211 through 299: six credits in philosophy (not including credits earned in first-year seminars) or permission of the instructor.
- For courses numbered 300 through 400: twelve credits in philosophy (not including credits earned in first-year seminars) or permission of the instructor.
Requirements for a Major:
69 credits in philosophy, including:
- One of the following introductory courses (6 credits):
- 110 Introduction to Philosophy
- 111 Introduction to Western Philosophy: Ancient and Medieval
- 112 Introduction to Western Philosophy: Modern
- Each of the following core courses (24 credits):
- 210 Logic
- 211 Metaphysics
- 212 Epistemology
- 213 Ethics
- One of the following courses in the history of philosophy (6 credits):
- 270 Ancient Philosophy
- 272 Modern Philosophy
- 274 Extistentialism
- 276 Topics in the History of Philosophy
- Two elective courses numbered 220 or above (12 credits):
- 220 Topics
- 232 Social and Political Philosophy
- 234 Aesthetics
- 235 Feminist Philosophy
- 242 Environmental Ethics
- 250 Philosophy of Physics
- 251 Philosophy of Biology
- 253 Philosophy of Cognitive Science
- 281 Advanced Logic
- Advanced courses and comps (21 credits)
- 395 Advanced Seminar (at least two sections must be taken – 12 credits)
- 399 Senior Thesis (6 credits)
