Dartmouth's first Undergraduate Philosophy Conference, sponsored by Dartmouth's undergraduate philosophy journal Aporia. The conference will be held on April 5th 2008. Kenneth Manders, Department of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh will give a talk about ontology and mathematics. The talk will be this Friday November 2nd at 3:35 Pm in room 1-132, Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Abstract:I will argue that representation (and correspondences between representations) should replace ontology as the central explainer in the philosophy of mathematics.The argument has two parts. The core of the argument shows how distinctive qualities of competing representations help explain the ability of their users to grasp (and prove) mathematical relationships.I refer to several case studies (Descartes vs Euclid, but especially:ways of representing knots).The closing argument contrasts ways in which traditional ontology-oriented inquiries are unproductive in explaining the intellectual power of mathematics. I sat down with Brian Woodcock and Jason Deck to ask them about their academic interests, favorite foods, and how they ended up in the world of philosophy. Get to know our two new philosophy professors by reading their interesting answers.

A conference will be held at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. The banquet keynote speaker will be Jerry Fodor, from Rutgers University. Papers on all philosophical topics excepted, word limit approximately 3000 (10-12 pages). Submission deadline: February 1, 2008. Final decisions will be made by February 28, 2008. Volunteers for paper commentators are also welcome, as well as group papers and panel topics. Schedule: Friday April 18: Conference Banquet 6:30-8:00 pm and Keynote talk Saturday April 19: Breakfast (7-8 am), Paper sessions (8am- 1pm), Conference Luncheon (1-2pm), and Paper Sessions (2-6pm). Truman State University will hold its 18th Annual Undergraduate Philosophy & Religion Conference on Saturday, November 10, 2007. They have issued a call for papers whose deadline is October 5. Papers should be 10 - 15 pages. Presentations should be approximately thirty minutes including time for questions. Please see http://phre.truman.edu/conference for more details.

West Virginia University's Department of Philosophy is hosting a conference on the philosophy of time April 25 and 26, 2008 in Morgantown, WV. The details of the conference, "Time on Trial: One Hundred Years of McTaggart's Argument against Time," are described more fully in the attached flyer.
