My family and I enjoyed a special year. Physician son Allen and daughter-in-law Phaye went all out for Senator Barack Obama’ election campaign. Allen and sons traveled to Wuhan, China for traditional martial arts competition; one of them won a bronze medal. Daughter Linda, a vice president and associate broker with the Corcoran Group of New York City is in the top 1% of producers in residential sales, despite the housing slowdown . . . Josie is ending her two-year term on a Residents Advisory Council, and I’m nominated to the council for 2009-2010. A new era is dawning; we are looking to the changes with patience and anticipation. May all research in the sciences enjoy a better future as well.

You won’t get too many responses from the Class of ‘47. I found it interesting that you have had “for years” a professional Instrument Maker/Manager. In 1946, the job was done by two students, working part-time for 25c/hr, Donald Stork (Class of ‘48) and I. I can’t remember there being any other physics majors at the time. So one can see the progress!
So what am I doing now? Forsaking physics completely, except for the current reading of Isaacson’s biography of Einstein (you can see that there is a bit of lingering interest in the subject), in favour of my unfulfilled childhood dream of studying the piano -- which requires just as much labour as physics did but is much more fun, a good occupation for retirees. I recommend it. And if one is lucky enough to have an orchestra at hand so that she can play her French horn too, well that is a bit of heaven.

I am quite busy, for an old retired guy. The most fun is chairing the External Advisory Panel for the Thirty-Meter Telescope project, a cooperative venture among UC and Caltech, among others. Most time-consuming but also rewarding is being a member of the Board of Governors of the LLC’s that manage Los Alamos and Livermore laboratories, and chairing their Science and Technology Committee.

Teaching one class in computer networking at a local community college is my part-time employment. Involved in the lives of three grandsons, ages 12, 8, and 4 is precious. Continue to enjoy the teaching, gardening, recycling, church activities, and collecting and splitting firewood.
