It must be my interest in science that led me to work on three technical product areas in my American career of thirty some years: jet propulsion, electronic slide rule (finding the natural log to ten-digit accuracy instantly), and Information Technology. Since I grew up in China and have lived there for twenty years, the process of reckoning with life as I age (eighty-two this year) awakened a new interest. I have been working part-time on “China Business Relations.” This leads me to meet delegations from China at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. and through the Maryland-China Business Council. The net effect is a focused interest in helping the mother country with her water supply and water quality problems, plus all kinds of adult education needs. Next spring I hope to pay a visit to China and provide some relations assistance to their provincial and municipal leaders. Among other things, I use a Chinese language word processor and Microsoft Word to help both sides of the trade partnership better understand their bilateral needs and requirements. It all has been fun.

What a retired seismologist does for fun: I kept a detailed record of the bangs and shakes as the top 10 floors were removed from our 14-story Memphis VA hospital. Hospital service was maintained on floors one to three during the 4-month demolition procedure. I am also continuing with volunteer math tutoring in Memphis City Schools. Things here are getting a little tense as NCLB (No Child Left Behind) bears down on inner city schools.
