When I received a Ph.D. in Physics, my Dad had one copy of my thesis beautifully bound in blue with gold lettering. The copies had been made using a chemical process and slowly, over the passing years, the pages faded so that now one opens this book to find blank pages. In many ways all of my numerous years of education resemble this book; over the years the associated neurons have passed on and now I find that I am puzzled by subjects that used to absorb me. This is especially true of mathematical complexities, the very language of science. I have found "use it or lose it" to be distressingly true. One area of today's science disturbs me: the apparent marriage of science and politics. We used to fool around in the lab until something interesting was noted, a theory was proposed, and the theory was then tested in many labs. Now the idea comes first: "Save the Manatee", "Global Warming", etc. The scientist then heads into the lab to justify a preconceived politically correct idea. When did a vote of the public start to determine scientific truth? Enough of that blather, Lory and I retired to Naples, Florida many years ago. We enjoy cruising on our small trawler, visiting our three sons and grandchildren, and spending every other summer at our place on Lake Roosevelt in northern Minnesota. For example, we spent the month of June cruising the Abacos in our first venture across the gulfstream (see the September issue of PassageMaker Magazine) and August was spent in Seattle trying to keep up with the family of our youngest son. We are very fortunate in our life though some days retirement can bring tedium.

The news this year is that a half century minus five years after I graduated from Carleton with a physics major, my son, Aaron Robinson, is a freshman at Carleton. He won't major in physics, I suppose, but he is quite happy at the college, living in Watson, taking a broad range of courses, and playing cello in the orchestra. Having grown up in Virginia, he elected to go to a cold weather school where, among other things, he could learn to play hockey. My wife and I visited during parent's weekend in October, and much enjoyed attending classes and seeing what's new on campus and in the expanded Northfield.

Hi all, still enjoying retirement in Maine with trips to Charlotte, North Carolina and Reno, Nevada areas for family visits. Carol and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary with kids and grandkids last spring and attended my 50th high school reunion in St. Paul last September. I followed that with the 10th Old Geezer canoe trip with high school buddies in the Ensign and Birch Lake region of the BWCA in northern Minnesota. Didn’t run into Paul Nachman on the trail this time. Hope you’re tripping, Paul!

Chris and I are still enjoying life in Los Altos, California. It is especially nice to be able to see our children and grandchildren often. Our daughter Betsy and her husband and three children live nearby in Los Altos. Linda and her husband live across the Bay in Oakland. We acquired a Samoyed puppy in May and therefore remained at home this summer. Our little puppy is now alarmingly large! We have been taking a Spanish language class this year in order to give our brains some exercise. Best wishes to all!
