Integrated Photonics and Applications
As the demand for faster and higher-performance electronic devices increases due to an increase in data storage and data transfer, the technology of miniaturization of electronic systems face problems in terms of power consumption, increased resistance and physical limitations. However, along with recent progresses and advances in optics, there has been great research interest in the area of making devices using photons as information carriers and even in hybridizing the two technologies. In this presentation, I will examine the underlying physics principles behind the integrated photonics, which combines different optical elements onto a single optical substrate. Specifically, I will focus on the generation and transmission of light, propagation through guided structures such as optical waveguides and detection using photodetectors. The talk will also discuss some of the applications of integrated photonics in such areas as bio-medical and computing fields.
