Physical Implementations of Digital Logic
Since their invention in 1948, transistors have become ubiquitous in society. In particular, they have found great use in integrated circuits and microprocessors. This paper will take an evolutionary perspective on digital logic, beginning with early implementations using vacuum tubes and proceeding to investigate metal-oxide- semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). MOSFET properties pertinent to their operation and design in logic gate will be analyzed. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the properties, benefits, and areas of continuing development of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) logic devices.
