Graduate School in Physics and Astronomy

Many of our graduates pursue further study in physics or closely related fields, the entire physics and astronomy faculty plays a large role in advising these majors about graduate schools. About two-thirds of our graduating physics majors continue on to graduate school, many in physics, but others in fields such as engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, astrophysics, biophysics, geophysics, medicine, and architecture. Any major planning to apply to graduate schools in physics or closely related disciplines is encouraged to discuss his or her selection in consultation with several faculty members, and the faculty look on the writing of letters of reference as an important part of their responsibility.

The college has several resources available to help you apply for post-baccalaureate fellowships. The most prestigious and competitive of the post-baccalaureate national scholarships have familiar names such as Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright. The application process for many of these fellowships starts during the junior year. Check out the links below if you are interested in these types of opportunities.

If you are considering going directly into Graduate School in physics, astronomy or a related scientific field there are graduate fellowships for which you may be qualified. Consult with your professors about whether you are a good candidate for these awards. Entering Graduate School with a fellowship is not necessary to pay your bills, however, a fellowship may provide you with some real additional advantages during your post-baccalaureate career (access to a research group, fewer teaching obligations, highlights for your resume when your Ph.D. is completed, etc.). Below are fellowships to consider as a graduating chemistry major. Be sure to check the eligibility requirements and award obligations carefully.

 

The Department of Defense offers the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship for students at the beginning of their graduate studies. There is no military service obligation. For more information visit www.asee.org/ndseg.

The Department of Defense offers the Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation (SMART) Defense Scholarship for Service Program for students with demonstrated ability and special aptitude in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) Program provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing a Ph.D. in scientific or engineering disciplines with an emphasis in high-performance computing. The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) has established the DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship ( DOE SCGF) program to support outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the U.S. More information can be found at http://scgf.orau.gov/.

The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (SSGF) Program provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing a Ph.D. in areas of interest to stewardship science, such as high-energy density physics, low-energy nuclear science or properties of materials under extreme conditions. Fellows also participate in research ar a DOE laboratory. More information at www.krellinst.org/ssgf.

The Institute for Gravitational Research (IGR), University of Glasgow, performs world-leading research in gravitational-wave detection and astrophysics. PhD projects offered by the institute include research in both ground and space-based instrumentation as well as materials and data analysis research. More information on IGR and its programme can be found at http://www.physics.gla.ac.uk/igr/index.php?L1=research.  Currently the IGR is looking for exceptional, highly-motivated, students to apply for PhD studentships through the SUPA Prize Studentship Programme. Further information on these studentships can be found at http://apply.supa.ac.uk/  These studentships are highly competitive and favour applicants who have had some experience working in a research environment, especially if their work has been published. A successful applicant will start a PhD with 3.5 years of funding. The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowships for innovators in the applied Physical and Engineering Sciences awards approximately 20 fellowships each year. Applicants must be applying to or be presently enrolled in a Ph.D program.  More information can be found at http://www.hertzfoundation.org.

National Physical Science Consortium fellowships are open to all students with emphasis on recruiting historically underrepresented minority and women students in the physical sciences and related engineering fields. For more information visit the website http://www.npsc.org.

The NSF Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship website http://www.igert.org/index.asp has information about graduate stipends that are available.

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes and supports future leaders in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics field. Application deadlines vary by field. More information can be found at www.fastlane.nsf.gov/grfp/.

The Smithsonian Institution offers fellowships for research and study in many fields including astrophysics and astronomy and materials research. Additional information and application materials are available at www.si.edu/research+study.

The University of Virginia offers merit based Jefferson Scholars Graduate Fellowships to sustain recipients for five years of graduate study at the UVA. The Fellowships are granted to the most exceptional candidates who have applied for admission to the University's doctoral programs. For more information visit www.jeffersonscholars.org.

The Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship (KTSF) is aimed at men and women who have recently earned at least a bachelor's degree in a physical science and now want to become licensed to teach high school physics, physical science, Earth science and/or chemistry. The fellowship provides both financial and professional support for up to five years, including tuition assistance and a stipend while fellows participate in a recognized teacher credential program.More information can be found at www.kstf.org.
