Human night vision is one of the most deficient in the animal kingdom, from the inability to resolve images to complete colorblindness in dim light. The focus of this talk is to introduce the night vision mechanisms of superior creatures that have been helpful as models for human night vision devices. I will examine domestic cats, rattlesnakes and the brownsnout spookfish, a deep-dwelling ocean fish, to discover how they cope with dim light conditions. How these creatures see at night will fuel the discussion of infrared and panoramic night vision goggle technology.
