Internship Opportunities - 4/7/08 Update

  • Hatton Sumners Terrorism and Law Internship Program, Summer 2008
Sponsored by the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism and the Hatton Sumners Foundation. MIPT is offering two college students the opportunity to spend the 2008 summer researching and writing about the intersection of law and America's counterterrorism efforts. The internship program provides both students with a $5,000 stipend and opportunity to utilize the resources at MIPT's disposal to include both a physical library as well as subject matter experts in the field of counterterrorism. Interns will produce an original research paper that MIPT will publish and distribute under the student's name for the benefit of the counterterrorism community. The research will be supervbised by Prof. Marc Jonathan Blitz, a legal scholar and teacher at the Oklahoma City University School of Law.   • Al Franken for Senate Summer Internship 2008

Join Team Franken! We are looking for interns to work in the St. Paul campaign office with Al this summer. This is a great opportunity for political science/communications majors or anyone interested in politics. Students can receive internship credits for their work as well. Our interns are an essential part to the campaign. We need enthusiastic, hard-working people to help with the planning of events and appearances, recruit volunteers, and other general campaign work. Getting involved with a Senate campaign is a great experience for students eager to learn about the political process and plan for the future.

DETAILS:
Work 10-20 hours per week. Set your own schedule.
Office hours: 10-5 weekdays, 5-8 pm Tuesday-Thursday
Events vary, evenings and some weekends
No prior campaign experience is necessary.
This internship is unpaid.

Work in the Finance, Field or Communications department:

Finance intern duties: Receiving, sorting and distributing campaign mail, processing monetary and non-monetary campaign contributions, and representing the campaign at fundraising events

Field intern duties: Help with the planning of Al's events and campaign appearances, recruiting volunteers, updating information on supporters, and doing visibility at events (holding signs, handing out campaign materials, signing up volunteers)

Communications: Press and Research

Press duties: Collecting press clips, monitoring radio and TV, putting together press packets and assisting the communications team with other projects

Research duties: Writing policy briefs and assisting with a variety of research projects.

  • Governor Pawlenty's Communications Department internship program
This summer program is designed to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience by working in a challenging professional environment, which offers exposure to public policy issues and a behind the scenes look at the interaction between the Governor’s Office and the media.

The Communications Department assists the Governor in communicating his initiatives, priorities and views to the citizens of Minnesota. This includes issuing press releases and other special announcements, scheduling press conferences, publishing the Governor's public schedule and announcing appointments to various offices.

A minimum 12-hour commitment per week is necessary. All internships are unpaid, and students may be able to arrange for college credit. Students should be college sophomores, juniors, or seniors with previous office experience and computer skills. Maturity and excellent communication skills are necessary. Interns will prepare news clips, assist in general office work, do research for speechwriters, handle logistics for gubernatorial events including press conference preparation, write news summaries, and distribute press releases. Students interested in a summer 2008 internship must apply by Friday, April 18, 2008.
