  • American Academy of Diplomacy Essay Contest

The American Academy of Diplomacy is an association of 200 former US Ambassadors, General Officers from the military, and Senior Foreign Policy officials who have achieved the highest ranks in their professions. One of the Academy’s objectives is to stimulate interest in a foreign policy career among the best college and graduate students concentrating in international affairs. In this connection, we sponsor an annual writing contest with substantial cash awards of $8,000 and $5,000 for first and second place respectively. The first-prize winner will be invited to Washington at the Academy’s expense to discuss her or his work with a senior official at the Department of State.

To help familiarize college and graduate students with actual State Department procedures, participants must, by June 9, 2008, submit an “Action Memorandum” to the Secretary of State of no more than 1,500 words, to be judged by members of the Academy. This is a format most students will not be familiar with but which is the standard at the State Department and White House for getting a decision on a foreign policy issue. The detailed rules of the contest and a sample format for the Action Memo are attached.

Open to any American citizen who is enrolled during the Spring Semester of 2008 either as an undergraduate degree student majoring in a field related to international affairs or as a graduate student in an advanced degree program related to international affairs.
