Essay contest winners announced
April 28th, 2008
In February, the entire Russian 102 class participated in the annual National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest sponsored by the American Council of Teachers of Russian. Sara Cantor and Elissa Brown won third place medals, and Kathryn Derrah received an Honorable Mention.
For the contest students are required to write for one hour on an assigned topic without using books or dictionaries of any kind. This year's prompt asked students to comment on the first line of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina: "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
Each essay was ranked by three judges in Russia. 723 essays submitted from 50 different American institutions.
