Further Education and Opportunities

After Carleton

From time to time during the year we bring to the campus alumni of the department and others who can share experiences and knowledge that you may find useful in thinking about how you can build on your major in the world outside. Folders located in the SOAN Lounge contain recent mailings from graduate programs. Announcements of position openings especially suited to SOAN majors are posted on our bulletin board. Most important: remember to spend some time in Carleton's Career Center.

Graduate Schools

If your plans include graduate school immediately upon leaving Carleton, you should have a major research paper completed by the end of your junior year. You'll need this polished research effort for successful application to graduate schools. If you plan to wait a year or more before applying to graduate school your comps research will usually more than suffice. The AAA and ASA guides to graduate departments are available in the SOAN Lounge for browsing.

Careers

The qualitative and quantitative analytical skills acquired in the major prepare SOAN graduates for a wide variety of occupations. Some graduates join the workforce immediately, while others build on their SOAN skills with further technical training in other areas (medicine, law, social work, etc.). Below is a list of employment areas and employers who value and seek out SOAN degrees:
