Interests:Jim's interest is South Asia, and he has done fieldwork in Nepal off and on over the last 30 years - on economics and ecology among Magars (in a village two weeks walk from the nearest road), on education and tourism among Sherpas near Mount Everest, and more recently on a person-centered ethnography of a Brahmin human rights activist. As a visiting Fulbright Professor, he spent two years helping start a new Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Tribhuvan University. Jim retired in 2009 after 38 years at Carleton, and is now Chair of Sociology and Anthropology at a new college he is helping to start in Bhutan To view a bibliography of Jim's work, click here. |
