Stanford's Center for Latin American Studies offers a competitive one-year MA program that allows students to develop a broader understanding of the region, while at the same time focusing on a specific theme or focus of their choosing. To gain a broader range of knowledge, students are required to take courses on the environment, politics and economics, culture, and a foreign language. Students who wish to write an MA thesis also have that option available to them, but a thesis is not required. MA graduates have gone on to pursue PhDs or JDs or find work with nonprofits, governmental agencies, or the private sector.
