Carleton College Spanish Seminar in Madrid

Program Dates: Fall Term
Eligibility: Sophomores, juniors and seniors in love with Spain, literature, and the arts. Students must complete Spanish 205 or above by spring term 2004.
Course of Study, 18 credits: Students enroll in three regular courses and an additional independent reading course for a total of 18 credits. All courses count toward a major in Spanish or Romance Languages, and they apply toward the Certificate of Advanced Study in Foreign Language and Literature or Foreign Language and Area Studies.
Location and Lodging: Classes will be held at the Colegio Mahor Universitario Isabel de EspaƱa, one of several residencias (hall of residence or dorms) located at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. In order to immerse themselves in Spanish life and language, students will stay with carefully selected Spanish families.

Excursions: Cultural activities, speakers, and excursions within Madrid will supplement course work. In addition, there will be three major excursions to Toledo (two nights and three days), Seville (two nights and three days), and Barcelona (three nights and four days).
Expenses: Students pay the current Carleton comprehensive fee, which covers the costs of instruction, room and board, public transportation in Madrid, all group excursions, and most cultural events. Students are responsible for the cost of books, personal expenses, transportation to and from Madrid, and personal travel during the seminar. Estimates for expenses beyond airfare run from $400-$500 for ten weeks (around $200 per month). Student financial aid is applicable as on campus.
