It is common for students to know about one or two sources of academic assistance on campus, but there is so much more. This is a comprehensive list of resources and expertise available to all students at Carleton.

Drop-In Centers

The Language Center offers a wide variety of resources to aid in your language education. They can provide you with video cameras and language recording software for class-work.  Drop by the Center's help desk for assistance within Language and Dining Center (LDC) labs that are frequently used by language classes.  Additionally, many student staff working at the Language Center are native speakers of languages taught at Carleton.

The Math Skills Center exists to support all Carleton students in any mathematics or math-related course they are taking in which they are experiencing difficulty, either with the mathematical concepts or with the mathematical tools needed to succeed in the course.  Check for drop-in hours during the term.

Presentation, Events, and Production Support has a full service video, audio, and graphic design studio.  PEPS is located in the IdeaLab and has the latest in video, audio, and graphic design hardware and software.  It is a great place to work on class projects that require multimedia elements.

The Research/IT Desk is staffed by reference librarians and SCIC workers who can help you with any problems or questions you have while doing research at the library. Stop by if you're not sure how to go forward in your research, if you're having trouble with a printer, or if you need to know how to use EndNote

The ITS Helpdesk is a great place to learn about the computing environment at Carleton.  There are hundreds of computer applications in use, most are used for class assignments. The SCIC also has flat-bed scanners, slide scanners, card readers and other tools that are free for Carleton students to use.

The Writing Center is dedicated to working with students on any academic writing project and at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming to polishing a final draft.  Check the web site for information about drop-in locations or to schedule an appointment with a writing consultant.

Consultations

• Academic Tutoring - Interested in additional help in a particular subject area?  You can sign up for one-on-one tutoring in specific subjects.
• Fine Tuning Academic Skills - Who couldn't benefit from reflecting on one's time management, study, and test-preparation skills?  Tegra Straight is Carleton's Academic Skills Coach.  Tegra has office hours and is happy to set up appointments.  Just email her.
• Practicing Your Talk - How do you go from an outline to giving a polished talk?  Whether you are presenting as part of a group or individually the folks at the SpeakEasy can help you with communication skills, effective uses of presentation aids, organization, voice, clarity, and persuasive impact.
• Research Strategies and Resources - The reference librarians will help you with questions you have about the best way to research a topic or question. 
• Service Learning in the Community -  The Academic Civic Engagement office has information about transportation, previous comps projects that involved research in the region, information about summer internships, and profiles of Carleton students who have participated in academic civic engagement projects.
• Writing and Revising Strategies - You can sign up for appointments with writing assistants for help with your papers.
• Writing Assistants for Second-Language Learners - Students who identify themselves as non-native speakers of English may work one-on-one with a trained and experienced writing consultant who will be available to provide writing support for one to three hours per week.  If you are interested, contact Renata Fitzpatrick, Second-Language Writing Coordinator.
