FALL TERM 2009 -

William Shakespeare's comedy - MEASURE FOR MEASURE

The Duke of a corrupt and vice-ridden Vienna appoints a deputy, Angelo, to enforce the law, particularly laws against immorality, while he himself is to leave the city. He doesn't leave but remains in disguise to observe Angelo. The deputy, Angelo, promptly imprisons a young man of the city, Claudio, for fornication and condemns him to death. Claudio's sister, Isabella, a young novice, pleads for Claudio with Angelo who offers her an unholy bargain. The play deals with the consequences of that offer, and how the disguised Duke is able to circumvent the tragedy that seems inevitable.
