Description

The Carleton Archives was established in 1967 to preserve the history of Carleton College, Northfield. This growing digital collection comprises a variety of materials relating to the history of Carleton College, campus development, and buildings. Included are early campus maps, blueprints & architectural drawings for campus buildings, miscellaneous letters and documents. They all illuminate the early history of Carleton College, which was founded in 1866, one of the first private colleges in Minnesota. The originals are housed in the College Archives.

Horace Goodhue, Jr. Letters is one of the featured collections in Archives. These letters were written by Horace Goodhue, Jr., the first faculty member hired for Northfield College, which was to become Carleton in 1870. In letters dated 1876-1869, Goodhue wrote to his future wife, Isabella Bigelow, in New England, describing the Northfield landscape & amenities, daily life, teaching duties and student activities. Other letters offer insights into Carleton and Northfield life in its early years, including student letters describing the defeat of the James Younger Gang in 1876. The original letters are housed in the College Archives.
